For a home office, width is the easy part and depth is the part to check. The three 55-inch computer desks we compared are all about 20 inches deep or less, which is fine for a laptop and awkward for a monitor once the keyboard is in front of it. The Lufeiya 55-inch offers the most storage (four fabric drawers and two shelves), the PRAISUN is the clearest about its size (55.1 by 19.7 inches), and the MINOSYS has a desktop organizer but gives two different depths.

The MINOSYS bullet points give a depth of 19.6 inches while its table lists 15.73 inches, a gap of nearly 4 inches. That is the difference between a workable and a cramped monitor setup, so confirm it on the product page.
Depth check: how far can your screen sit from your eyes?
OSHA says the preferred distance from your eyes to the screen is 20 to 40 inches, and that you should view the monitor from at least 20 inches (OSHA monitor guidance). On a shallow desk, the keyboard takes the front and the screen sits at the back. Measure how far your eyes are from the front edge of the desk when you sit at the keyboard, then enter the desk depth and the gap behind the screen.
Screen distance estimate
All values in inches. Eyes to the front edge is measured while you sit at the keyboard. The gap behind the screen is the space between the back of the monitor and the desk’s back edge.
Simple sum: eyes to front edge plus desk depth minus the space behind the screen. A planning estimate that ignores the depth of the monitor stand.
Width check: how many monitors fit?
A 16:9 monitor is about 87 percent as wide as its diagonal, so a 24-inch screen is roughly 21 inches wide, a 27-inch about 23.5 inches and a 32-inch about 28 inches (our estimate from the 16:9 shape; check your monitor's spec). Two 24-inch monitors are about 42 inches wide, which leaves about 13 inches of a 55-inch desk for a laptop or notebook.

How to choose a home office desk

- Check leg room. OSHA suggests at least 20 inches of leg width and 17 inches of depth at knee level, and generally 20 to 28 inches of height under the desktop (OSHA layout guidance).
