Quick answer
Floating shelves hide their brackets inside the shelf and the wall, so the whole load is carried as leverage on a few fixings. That makes depth the number to watch. A shelf 12 inches deep with a book in the middle puts that book’s weight 6 inches from the wall; a shelf 5 inches deep puts it 2.5 inches out. The same 20 pounds pulls on the top fixing 2.4 times as hard on the deeper shelf. Choose depth for what you plan to put on it, then check the load row.

The three sets we read on Amazon on 2026-10-01 are an Amazon Basics 3-pack of 15.8 by 5 by 1.8 inch shelves with a listed maximum of 20 pounds, a RICHER HOUSE 36 inch long, 12 inch deep black set with a listed 20 pound maximum, and a rustic pine set of 24, 18 and 15 inch shelves at 7.9 inches deep. We have not tested any of them. All figures come from the listings.
Shelf area and total capacity
Surface area is length times depth:
- Amazon Basics: 15.8 × 5 = 79 square inches each; three shelves give 237 square inches.
- RICHER HOUSE: 36 × 12 = 432 square inches each; the listing says 2 shelves, so 864 square inches.
- Rustic pine set: 24 × 7.9 = 189.6, 18 × 7.9 = 142.2 and 15 × 7.9 = 118.5 square inches, a total of 450.3.
Listed loads are 20 pounds for the first two sets, and none in the rows we read for the pine set. The listings do not say whether 20 pounds is per shelf or for the set. If it is per shelf, the load per square inch is 20 ÷ 79 = 0.25 pounds for the Amazon Basics shelf and 20 ÷ 432 = 0.046 pounds for the 12 inch shelf. The deep shelf is rated for about one fifth the load per area. That is not a defect; a larger shelf spreads the same weight, but it also means a 36 inch shelf is not a place for a stack of hardcovers.
The lever arm in numbers
A load on a floating shelf tries to pull the top of the shelf away from the wall and push the bottom in. The turning effect is weight times distance from the wall. This is basic mechanics, not a listing figure. For a 20 pound load placed at the middle of the shelf:
- 5 inch deep shelf: 20 × 2.5 = 50 pound-inches.
- 12 inch deep shelf: 20 × 6 = 120 pound-inches.
That is 120 ÷ 50 = 2.4 times the pull on the fixings for the same weight. If the load sits at the front edge, the figures double. This is why heavy items belong on the shelf’s back half, near the wall, and why depth matters as much as the weight limit.
The wall decides
The listed maximum assumes you install the shelf as the maker says, into a solid part of the wall. A shelf fixed to drywall alone with plastic plugs will hold much less than one screwed into studs. We did not find a figure for what a given anchor holds in the sources we opened, so we do not give one. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the hardware supplied for your wall type. In many homes studs are commonly spaced 16 inches apart on center, a general construction convention that varies by house; a stud finder tells you for sure. A 36 inch shelf can usually reach two studs if you place it right, and the listing’s hardware should be used at each.
Sizes and what they suit
A 5 inch deep shelf suits picture frames, small plants and a few paperbacks. A 7.9 inch shelf suits paperbacks and small books. A 12 inch shelf suits large books, baskets and a lamp, but only if the load and the fixing allow it. If you want to display books face-out, the depth must be greater than the book’s height or the book leans back. Measure your items before you choose.
Materials
The pine set is listed as wood. The Amazon Basics set lists wood in its title. The deep set lists black but the rows we read do not name the material. If a shelf has composite parts, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that since March 22, 2019 composite wood products, including household goods that contain them, must be labeled TSCA Title VI compliant under its formaldehyde rule. A listing may state compliance; if it does not, ask. A thin wood shelf can sag over a long span. The pine set’s dimension row gives a thickness of 1.4 inches, and the listing does not say how the 24 inch shelf handles a heavy load, so keep it for light items.
A worked example: layout over a sofa
These sums use assumed room sizes. Your sofa is 84 inches wide and its back is about 34 inches high. You want two 36 inch shelves side by side with a 4 inch gap, centered over it.
- Total width: 36 + 4 + 36 = 76 inches. Centered on 84, each side has (84 − 76) ÷ 2 = 4 inches of margin.
- Height: placing the shelf about 12 inches above the sofa back puts it at 34 + 12 = 46 inches from the floor. The 12 inch deep shelf then sticks out 12 inches from the wall at 46 inches high, which is low enough that a tall person leaning back on the sofa could hit it. This is a planning concern, not a listing figure.
- Alternative: use the 5 inch shelves, 15.8 inches long, in a row of three with 4 inch gaps. Their total length is 3 × 15.8 + 2 × 4 = 55.4 inches, centered on 84 with (84 − 55.4) ÷ 2 = 14.3 inches margin each side.
For a sofa wall, a shelf 5 to 8 inches deep avoids head contact and still holds frames and a plant. Reserve the 12 inch depth for a free wall.
Spacing rows of shelves
Leave enough vertical gap for the tallest item on the lower shelf plus a few inches of air. We assume a gap of 12 inches for books and 8 inches for frames, a planning choice. Use a level and a tape measure, and mark stud positions first. Hold the shelf in place with painter’s tape and check the level before you drill.
Cables and lighting
Floating shelves are not designed to hide cables, but a gap behind the shelf, if the bracket is slim, can take a thin lamp cord. The rows we read do not mention cable channels. Do not run cords through the wall to the shelf unless the manufacturer says you can.
Choosing between the three sets
For frames and small plants, the Amazon Basics pack has the shallowest depth and the highest load per square inch, if its 20 pounds is per shelf. For a statement piece on a free wall, the 36 inch deep set gives the most surface, 864 square inches, but you must keep items light and near the wall. For a graduated display of paperbacks, the pine set offers three lengths in one pack, with no stated limit, so treat it as a light-duty set until the seller confirms.
Fixing and finishing checks
Before you drill, check for pipes and cables behind the wall; a stud finder with a cable detector helps. Mark the shelf’s top edge with a level and pencil, then mark screw positions through the bracket. Use a drill bit sized for the anchors or screws supplied. After mounting, press down on the shelf and tug it forward gently; any movement means a loose fixing. Fill small holes in a wall with filler if you ever move a shelf.

Mistakes to avoid
Treating the load number as per shelf without checking is the first. Loading the front edge is the second. The third is skipping the studs.
Who should skip floating shelves
If you rent and cannot drill into studs, or if you want to hold a heavy book collection, a floor-standing bookcase is safer. If you want a TV on a wall, use a mount designed for it, not a shelf.
Frequently asked questions
How much weight can floating shelves hold?
The listings we read give 20 pounds for two sets and none for the third. The wall fixing sets the real limit, so follow the instructions and use studs where possible.
How deep should living room floating shelves be?
Five to eight inches suits frames and paperbacks. Twelve inches suits larger items but pulls harder on the fixings, 2.4 times as hard as a 5 inch shelf in our example.
How high should I hang floating shelves above a sofa?
Leave enough room for heads to clear, and consider a shallow shelf. In our example, 12 inches above a 34 inch sofa back is 46 inches from the floor.
Can I put a TV on floating shelves?
Not unless the shelf is designed for it. Use a proper TV mount or a TV stand.
Bottom line
Floating shelves work when depth, load and fixing agree. Pick the shallowest depth that holds your items, put heavy things near the wall, and screw into studs.
