Quick answer
A sofa with an ottoman gives you a place to put your feet up, and often an extra seat or a chaise. Before you choose, check three things: the total footprint with the ottoman in place, the ottoman height compared with the seat height, and the walking route that remains. An ottoman is the piece most likely to end up in the way, so its size matters as much as the sofa’s.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: an L-shaped cloud sectional listed at 78.7 by 61 inches with a movable ottoman, a modular sectional whose page we read showed the ottoman module at 33.46 inches square, and a 114 inch cloud sectional whose size fields look like package dimensions. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat on any of them. All numbers come from the listings.
If you want an ottoman on its own, see ottoman furniture. If you want a single seat with a footrest, see sofa chair. For a modular layout without an ottoman, see modular sectional couches.
Three things sellers call a sofa with ottoman
The phrase covers several designs. One is a sofa with a built-in chaise, sometimes called an ottoman on one end, that is part of the frame. Another is a modular set where one cushion is a separate ottoman you can move. A third is an ordinary sofa sold with a matching footstool or a storage ottoman.
The difference matters. A built-in chaise cannot be moved, so the room has to suit its side. A movable ottoman can sit in front of the sofa, at the end, or be used as a seat. A separate footstool can go anywhere, but it is easy to lose.
Match the ottoman height to the seat
For putting your feet up, the ottoman should be at or a little below the seat height, so your knees stay comfortable. As a planning rule of ours, not a standard, aim for an ottoman height within about 2 inches below the seat height.
Listings give both numbers. The Leyu&Hafort listing gives a seat height of 18.1 inches. The Novilla page we read, which was the ottoman module, gives a height of 16.54 inches, which is 1.56 inches below that seat. The 114 inch listing gives a seat height of 11.5 inches, which is very low, close to floor level. If you prefer to sit higher or find it hard to stand from low seats, this is the number to look at first.
Footprint and the walking route
Measure the wall, then subtract the sofa’s listed width and depth. The U.S. Access Board’s accessible-route guidance uses 36 inches as a minimum continuous clear width for a route and 32 inches at short points such as doorways. That is a public-building rule and only a yardstick for a home, but it helps decide how much floor to leave between the ottoman and the next piece of furniture.
The Leyu&Hafort listing gives 61 inches deep by 78.7 inches wide by 35.4 inches high for its L-shaped layout. The Novilla ottoman module is 33.46 by 33.46 inches. Put the ottoman in front of the sofa and its 33.46 inches adds to the depth of the seating zone, so count both.
Seat depth and legs
The Leyu&Hafort listing gives a seat depth of 20.8 inches and describes a solid wood frame with an elevated base and legs, which lifts the seat off the floor. The Novilla ottoman module gives a seat depth of 23.62 inches. A seat of about 21 inches suits upright sitting, and deeper suits lounging. See sofa chair for how to match seat depth to your leg length.
Storage and movement
Some ottomans open for storage, and some are solid foam. The Novilla listing describes movable modules and a “no assembly” approach, and the Leyu&Hafort listing describes a configurable ottoman, but none of the three pages we read said that its ottoman has a storage compartment. If you want storage, look for the word “storage” in the bullets and a stated capacity, and ask if a listing is silent.
A movable ottoman lets you change the layout. The Leyu&Hafort listing describes 11 configurations. Try it in both positions, at the end of the sofa and in front, before you decide where it lives. A movable piece also needs a stable floor, so check for a non-slip base.
Fabric, foam and comfort
The Leyu&Hafort listing names chenille fabric, high-density foam and a tufted back. The Novilla page names chenille, a “Smarts Coil” support and claims OEKO-TEX certified fabric and CertiPUR-US foam. Those are seller claims; we did not see certificates. A fabric that feels soft in a photo can pill or stain, so follow the care label.
Cloud-style modular sofas are often shipped compressed in boxes. The Novilla listing describes no assembly. If a cushion arrives compressed, give it time to expand, and follow the seller’s instructions.
The three listings we read
Leyu&Hafort Modular Sectional Sofa, cloud style with a movable ottoman, chenille, green. The listing gives 61 inches deep, 78.7 inches wide and 35.4 inches high, a seat depth of 20.8 inches, a seat height of 18.1 inches, a weight of 170.9 pounds, a seating capacity of 3, a solid wood frame with legs and 11 layout configurations. Good for: a living room where you want an L-shape with a movable ottoman and a raised base. Keep in mind: at 170.9 pounds the pieces are heavy to move, and the listing does not say whether the ottoman stores items. From the site owner’s Vietnam delivery address the page said it could not be shipped there, so we could not see an Add to Cart button; that is a geographic limit, not proof of no stock in the United States.
Novilla Modular Sectional Sofa, cloud sectional couch with Smarts Coil support. The page we read showed the ottoman module: 33.46 by 33.46 by 16.54 inches, a seat depth of 23.62 inches, a weight of 22.7 pounds and a weight capacity of 300 pounds. The bullets describe no assembly, movable modules, chenille fabric and certified materials. Good for: a buyer who wants to build the layout from modules and add an ottoman. Keep in mind: each size option on the page has different numbers, so choose the sofa configuration you want and read its own numbers. This page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
114 inch Cloud Sectional Couch with L-Shape Chaise, Modular Sofa with Movable Ottoman. The listing gives a seating capacity of 4, a listed weight of 118 pounds, a seat height of 11.5 inches and a corduroy cover. Good for: a low, deep, floor-level style of seating with room for four. Keep in mind: the size field shows 18 by 18.5 by 46.5 inches, which looks like a package size and not the sofa, and the page has almost no other description. Ask for the real dimensions before you plan the room. It also showed the shipping message from Vietnam.
A worked example
These numbers are invented. A living room is 13 feet (156 inches) from the wall behind the sofa to the TV console, and you want the Leyu&Hafort L-shape with its ottoman.
The sofa’s listed depth is 61 inches. Leaving 156 − 61 = 95 inches to the console. Put the Novilla 33.46 inch ottoman in front of the sofa and the space becomes 95 − 33.46 = 61.54 inches. That clears our 36 inch yardstick with 25.54 inches to spare.
Now try a 9 foot (108 inch) room. The sofa leaves 108 − 61 = 47 inches. With the ottoman in front it is 47 − 33.46 = 13.54 inches, well under the yardstick. In that room the ottoman has to sit at the end of the sofa, or you need a smaller sofa.
Height check: the Leyu&Hafort seat is 18.1 inches and the Novilla ottoman module is 16.54 inches, so the ottoman is 18.1 − 16.54 = 1.56 inches below the seat, inside our 2 inch planning rule. The 114 inch listing’s 11.5 inch seat would need an ottoman of about 9.5 to 11.5 inches, which the page does not offer.
Red flags in listings
A listing with package dimensions in the size field, a listing that shows different numbers for each size option, or a listing that names the ottoman in the title but not in the bullets all need a question to the seller. Check that the price you see is for the configuration you want, because a module and a full set can share one page.
Also check weight. A cloud sofa in a box is a heavy load for a doorway or a stair, and some listings ship in several boxes.
Who should skip a sofa with ottoman
If the room is narrow, a separate footstool or a compact ottoman uses less floor. If you need firm support to stand up, a low cloud-style seat is a poor fit; look at lift chairs or a higher seat. If you want a bed as well, see sofa beds for small spaces.
Frequently asked questions
How much space does a sofa with ottoman need?
The sofa’s listed width and depth, plus the ottoman in its place, plus a walking route. A 36 inch route is a useful yardstick, not a rule for homes.
What height should the ottoman be?
At or slightly below the seat height. In our planning rule, within about 2 inches below. The numbers are on the listing.
Can an ottoman be used as a seat?
Some can. One listing we read gives a weight capacity of 300 pounds for its ottoman module. If there is no capacity, ask.
Does a sofa with ottoman have storage?
Not always. None of the three pages we read said that its ottoman stores items. Look for a stated storage compartment.
Why does one listing show 18 by 18.5 inches for a whole sofa?
That is likely a package size. Ask the seller for the real sofa dimensions.
Bottom line
Choose a sofa with an ottoman by footprint, height match and walking route. Of the three listings, the Leyu&Hafort gives the most complete numbers, the Novilla is the modular system you build yourself, and the 114 inch cloud couch is the one that needs the most questions. Put the ottoman in the room on paper before you buy.
