Quick answer
A leather swivel chair on Amazon is very often faux leather, sold under names such as PU leather, bonded leather or leather-look. The three listings we read all say so in their specifications, even where the title or a bullet says “leather”. That is fine if you want the look and easy wiping, but it should change what you expect from the wear and the feel. Beyond the material, check the seat depth, the seat height range and the weight rating, because those decide whether the chair fits you.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a mid-back faux leather chair with removable armrests, a low-cost faux leather chair with a stated seat height range of 18 to 21 inches and a mid-back task chair in polyurethane bonded leather. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat in any of them. All numbers come from the listings.
For material trade-offs, see mesh vs fabric vs leather office chair. For the two classic styles, see task chair vs executive chair. For a broader guide, see best office chair and high back office chair.
What “leather” means on a listing
Sellers use several words, and they are not the same. Genuine leather is animal hide. Bonded leather is leather scraps bonded to a backing. PU leather, also called polyurethane leather, is a plastic coating on a fabric base. “Leather-look” and “faux leather” mean a synthetic.
The HeroSet listing calls its material faux leather in the specification table and “premium PU leather” in a bullet, while its bullet title also says “modern premium leather chair”. The Roundhill listing says faux leather in its name. The Amazon Basics listing says polyurethane bonded leather and adds “(faux leather)” in the same bullet. None of the three states genuine leather, so treat all three as synthetic.
What that means for wear and feel
Synthetic leather wipes clean and is usually cheaper. It can feel warm in a hot room because it does not breathe like mesh. The listings do not say how the coating wears over years, so we cannot judge it. If you want a chair that breathes, see ergonomic mesh office chair.
The COLAMY and other leather-look chairs also appear in search results for this keyword. Their pages repeat the pattern: a title that says “leather” and a table that says “faux leather”.
Seat depth and the back of your knee
Seat depth is the front-to-back length of the seat. As our own planning estimate, not a standard, leave about 2 inches between the front of the seat and the back of your knee. The Roundhill listing gives a seat depth of 15 inches, the Amazon Basics listing gives 16.5 inches and the HeroSet listing does not give a seat depth in the text we read.
A shallow seat suits a shorter person. A taller person may find it unsupportive and will want a seat of 18 to 20 inches.
Seat height range
OSHA says the seat should allow your feet to rest flat on the floor or a footrest. The Roundhill bullet gives a seat height of 18 to 21 inches, which is a real range. The HeroSet listing gives a seat height of 19 inches and three height positions in the specification. The Amazon Basics listing gives 18.7 inches with a height-adjustable seat but no range in the text we read.
A single number does not tell you how low or high the chair goes, so look for a range.
Swivel and base
A swivel chair turns through a full circle, so it needs floor in every direction. The bases are 20 inches (Roundhill), 21 inches (HeroSet) and 24 inches (Amazon Basics). The Amazon Basics listing describes a five-point base, and the Roundhill listing names five casters. OSHA lists a five-leg base with casters as a feature of a good chair.
Casters on a hard floor can roll, and on carpet they can stick. If you have carpet, see office chair mat for carpet.
Armrests
The HeroSet listing has detachable armrests, which lets you sit cross-legged or slide the chair close to a desk. The Amazon Basics listing has padded armrests. The Roundhill listing does not mention armrests in the bullets we read. OSHA describes armrests that are soft and allow the shoulders to relax.
Removable arms help in a small room. Fixed arms can stop the chair from sliding under the desk.
Weight rating
The listings give a maximum weight recommendation: 300 pounds for the HeroSet, 160 kilograms for the Roundhill, which is about 352.7 pounds, and 275 pounds for the Amazon Basics, which it also gives as 124.7 kilograms. These are the sellers’ figures, and we have not verified them.
Size lines that disagree
The Amazon Basics listing gives 24.2 by 24 by 34.8 inches in the title and 24.2 by 24 by 38.6 inches in the specification, so the overall height differs by 3.8 inches depending on where you look. The Roundhill listing gives 20 by 20 by 34 inches and 20 by 20 by 31 inches in two fields, and 31 to 34 inches in a bullet, which is consistent with a height-adjustable chair. Always look for a range and assume the higher number is the chair at its tallest.
The three listings we read
HeroSet Leather Office Chair with Removable Armrests, mid-back (model RC2014). The listing gives 21 by 21 by 39 inches, a listed weight of 33 pounds, a seat height of 19 inches, a seat back interior height of 20 inches, a 300 pound maximum recommendation, faux leather over high-density foam, detachable armrests, a rocking function and 15 to 20 minute assembly. Good for: a home office where removable arms and a rocking tilt are useful. Keep in mind: no seat depth is given, and the title and the specification disagree on leather versus faux leather. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
Roundhill Furniture Cesena Faux Leather 360 Swivel Air Lift Office Chair, brown (model OF1012BR). The listing gives 20 by 20 by 34 inches, a seat 18 inches wide and 15 inches deep, a seat height of 18 to 21 inches, a listed weight of 15 pounds, a rating of 160 kilograms, a steel frame on five casters and a curved faux leather seat. Good for: a light, small-footprint chair for a short to average person. Keep in mind: a 15 inch seat depth is shallow, and the listing shows no armrests or lumbar support. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
Amazon Basics Office Task Chair, mid-back, black faux leather. The listing gives 24.2 by 24 by 34.8 or 38.6 inches, a seat depth of 16.5 inches, a seat height of 18.7 inches, a listed weight of 26.5 pounds, a 275 pound capacity, adjustable seat angle and tilt control, padded armrests and a five-point base. Good for: a basic task chair with tilt control from a known brand. Keep in mind: the overall height differs between the title and the specification. From the site owner’s Vietnam delivery address the page said it could not be shipped there, so we could not see an Add to Cart button; that is a geographic limit, not proof of no stock in the United States.
A worked example
These numbers are invented. A person measures 18 inches from the back of the hips to the back of the knee and 19 inches from the floor to the back of the knee with shoes, and weighs 290 pounds.
Seat depth. Using our 2 inch planning gap, the ideal depth is 18 − 2 = 16 inches. The Roundhill at 15 inches leaves a gap of 18 − 15 = 3 inches, and the Amazon Basics at 16.5 inches leaves 18 − 16.5 = 1.5 inches. Both are close; the HeroSet has no depth figure.
Height. The person needs 19 inches. The Roundhill range of 18 to 21 inches covers it. The HeroSet’s 19 inches matches exactly, but with no range we do not know how far it adjusts. The Amazon Basics at 18.7 inches is 19 − 18.7 = 0.3 inch below the target, which is fine because a seat slightly lower than the knee is acceptable.
Weight. At 290 pounds, the Roundhill’s 352.7 leaves 62.7 pounds, the HeroSet’s 300 leaves 10 pounds and the Amazon Basics’s 275 is 15 pounds under the person’s weight, so it is not suitable.
The example shows how a small, cheap chair can fit well on depth and height and still fail on weight.
Red flags in listings
A title that says leather while the table says faux, overall height that differs between fields and a rating that is given in kilograms in one place and pounds in another are signs to read carefully. Also watch for a leather chair with no seat depth or height range.
Who should skip a leather-look chair
If your room is warm, a faux leather seat can feel sticky, and mesh is a better choice. If you want a chair that lasts many years with heavy daily use, ask the seller how the coating is made and what the warranty covers. If you need strong lumbar adjustment, look at best ergonomic office chairs.
Frequently asked questions
Is a leather swivel chair on Amazon real leather?
Often not. The three listings we read all use faux leather or polyurethane bonded leather in their specifications, even when a title or bullet says leather.
What is the difference between bonded leather and PU leather?
Bonded leather uses leather scraps on a backing, and PU leather is a plastic coating. Neither is a full hide. Read the specification table.
What seat depth should I choose?
One that leaves about 2 inches behind your knee, by our estimate. Measure from the back of your hips to the back of your knee and subtract the seat depth.
How do I clean a faux leather chair?
Follow the care label. Most listings we read describe wiping with a damp cloth, but check your chair’s instructions.
Is a swivel chair good for a small room?
It needs floor in a full circle. A base of 20 inches fits better than one of 24 inches, and removable arms help.
Bottom line
Choose a leather swivel chair by material words, seat depth, height range and weight rating. Of the three listings above, the HeroSet has removable arms and a rocking tilt, the Roundhill is the light chair with a stated height range and a shallow seat, and the Amazon Basics has tilt control but lists two different heights. Expect faux leather and plan for it.
