A closet can hold a real desk if it is at least about 20 inches wide for your legs and deep enough to fit a desk plus knee room, and if you can keep the air moving and the light on. The easiest way to test is to measure three things, compare them with the numbers below, and mock the desk up with cardboard before you cut or buy anything.
What to measure
- Width from wall to wall inside the closet.
- Depth from the back wall to the door frame.
- Height from the floor to the top shelf or the ceiling, and the height of any existing shelf.
- Outlets and vents. Note where power is and whether the closet has ventilation.
- Chair space. Decide whether the chair will sit inside the closet or pull out into the room.
Numbers to aim for
| Item | Aim for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Leg opening width | At least 20 inches (52 cm) | OSHA’s minimum leg clearance width |
| Knee-level depth | At least 17 inches (44 cm) | OSHA’s minimum depth at knee level |
| Foot-level depth | About 24 inches (60 cm) | OSHA’s depth at foot level |
| Leg clearance height under the desk | About 20 to 28 inches | OSHA’s general range |
| Screen distance | 20 to 40 inches from your eyes | OSHA’s preferred viewing distance |
These come from OSHA’s workstation guidance (layout and monitors). A closet under 24 inches deep can hold a laptop desk if you can pull the chair out into the room, but it will feel tight with a monitor.
Building it
- Remove the doors if they are on hinges you can lift off, or use bifold doors that fold away. Keep the frame.
- Choose the desk height with our desk height calculator, since a closet desk is often custom.
- Use a shelf or a cut-to-size board fixed into the side walls. A freestanding narrow desk avoids fixing to the wall. See our guide to mounting a desk.
- Add shelves above, starting above the height of the monitor, so the top of the screen sits at or slightly below eye level.
- Mock it up first. Cut cardboard to the desk size, put your laptop or monitor on it, and sit for an hour to test.
- Pick a chair that fits. Armless and flip-up chairs are easier to move in and out of a nook. See our armless chair guide.
Heat, light and air
- Closets have little airflow. Leave the doors open or use a door that opens fully, and avoid heat-producing equipment.
- Add a small light, because closets are dark. A desk lamp or a clip light works.
- Check that any fixed shelf or wall fixing does not touch wiring. If in doubt, hire a professional.
Worked example: a 48 by 24 inch closet
A closet 48 inches wide and 24 inches deep can hold a desk of about 48 by 20 inches against the back wall. The 20-inch wide leg opening is easy to meet, since the desk spans the full width. The depth is the constraint: a 20-inch desk leaves 4 inches of the closet for the chair, so the chair sits in the room, and you pull in from the doorway. With a laptop that works. With a monitor, the screen sits at the back of a 20-inch desk, so check that your eyes can be at least 20 inches from it (OSHA’s minimum viewing distance).
What depth allows
- Under about 24 inches deep: a laptop desk, with the chair in the room. This is our planning guidance, not a standard.
- About 24 to 30 inches: a monitor is possible if the chair tucks in partly under the desk.
- More than 30 inches: the chair can sit inside the closet, but check the door swing and the room to get in and out.
Mistakes to avoid
- Building a desk that is too high for you because the shelf was already there. Use our desk height calculator first.
- Forgetting the chair. A chair that will not tuck in ends up in the middle of the room.
- Leaving no outlet. Plan the power before you cut.
- Making it too dark. Add light where you work, not only overhead.
- Skipping the cardboard mock-up, which is the cheapest way to find a problem.
Products worth checking
These products match the topic above. We have not tested them. Sizes and features come from the Amazon listings, checked on September 30, 2026; where a listing does not say, we say so.
Pamray 32 Inch Desk with 2 Drawers
This compact desk is about 31.5 inches wide and 15.75 inches deep, with two drawers. It has a powder-coated metal frame and a wood tabletop, and it fits a bedroom wall or a narrow spot beside a bed.
- Good for: bedrooms with no other storage nearby.
- Keep in mind: the depth is shallow, so leave space for the keyboard and a laptop stand rather than a big desktop setup.
Lufeiya 40-Inch Small Desk with Fabric Drawers
A simple option: a compact 40-inch desk with two open fabric drawers behind wooden fronts and a shelf, with steel brackets and adjustable feet listed for stability. The listing says assembly takes 20 to 30 minutes and that the drawers can be installed on either side.
- Good for: a small bedroom or dorm where you need a bit of storage and only a laptop on the desk.
- Keep in mind: a depth of about 19.7 inches leaves little space for a keyboard, mouse and paper together, and the listing does not state a weight limit.
FEZIBO 32-Inch Small Electric Standing Desk
A compact desk, with a 32 by 19 inch desktop that the listing describes as suited to apartments, bedrooms and dorm rooms. The listing states a steel frame, three memory presets, a stated noise level under 45 dB and 50,000 lift cycles tested by the maker.
- Good for: a laptop setup or one small monitor in the tightest space.
- Keep in mind: 19 inches of depth is shallow for a monitor, keyboard and a comfortable viewing distance, and its lowest height, 28.3 inches, may be higher than a seated desk suits you.
Frequently asked questions
Can you turn a closet into an office?
Yes, if it is wide and deep enough for a desk and your legs, and has light and air.
How deep should a closet be for a desk?
About 24 inches gives room for a desk and a laptop, but a monitor and legs need more space, and the chair can pull out into the room.
How wide should a closet desk nook be?
At least 20 inches for your legs, which is OSHA’s minimum leg clearance width. Wider is more comfortable, especially if you use a mouse.
Do I need to remove the closet doors?
Usually yes, or use bifold or sliding doors that open fully. Work with the door closed if there is enough airflow.
Is a closet office good for video calls?
It is quiet and private, and the background is simple. Check the lighting, because a dark closet needs a light on your face.
