Quick answer
One maker’s warranty, Nest Bedding, requires slats spaced no more than four inches apart, and for a queen or larger a rigid center support that reaches the floor. Other makers set different limits, so read your own mattress warranty. For an 80 inch queen length, slats 1.97 inches wide need 15 slats to keep each gap under 4 inches (the gap works out to 3.6 inches). A replacement pack must match your frame’s slat length and thickness, and a bunkie board or center support is a different part from a slat.
The rule from a mattress warranty
We opened the Nest Bedding warranty page on 2026-10-01. It says the warranty requires slats spaced no more than four inches apart (we read that as the gap between slats), that a solid platform foundation is acceptable, that queen-size and larger mattresses need a rigid center support that extends to and contacts the floor and that flexible, bowed, curved or flexing slats, including euro slats, void it. It also excludes traditional box springs or foundations that do not provide rigid, flat support. Treat this as one example: another maker may require 3 inches or less, and the safest move is to read the warranty for your own mattress.
Worked example: how many slats for a queen
This is our own arithmetic. The slats run across the width and are spaced along the 80 inch length. With slats 1.97 inches wide (the Sintuff table value), N slats take N times 1.97 inches and leave N minus 1 gaps. The gap is (80 minus N times 1.97) divided by (N minus 1).
| Slats | Total slat width | Gap between slats |
|---|---|---|
| 14 | 27.6 in | (80 − 27.6) / 13 = 4.03 in |
| 15 | 29.6 in | (80 − 29.6) / 14 = 3.60 in |
| 17 | 33.5 in | (80 − 33.5) / 16 = 2.91 in |
Fourteen slats leave a gap of 4.03 inches, just over a four inch limit. Fifteen leave 3.6 inches, inside it, and seventeen leave 2.91 inches, which is under three inches if your maker asks for three. The numbers are for an 80 inch length and do not include any frame rails at the ends.
Width. The Sintuff slats are 29.53 inches long, so two end to end span 59.06 inches, which is 0.94 inch short of a 60 inch queen mattress width. The listing says they are for metal slatted bases with a center support beam, so check how your frame’s slat ends are held. For 15 rows of two slats you need 30 slats, which is six packs of five.
What the products say
Sintuff 5 Pack Wooden Slats Bed Slats Replacement for Queen, Full, Twin (ASIN B0FQBTH1DB). The table gives 29.53 by 1.97 by 0.39 inches, a weight of 1.81 pounds for the pack and 5 items. The title says 5 pack; one bullet says you receive 10 pieces; the size line says about 29.3 by 0.32 by 2 inches. The bullets say they are planed and sanded wood with a moisture-resistant veneer on both sides, for replacing broken slats on most frames. Best for: repairing a frame whose slats match. Watch out: the pack count (5 or 10) and the thickness (0.39 or 0.32 inch) are stated two ways, so confirm what arrives before you plan 30 slats.
Voyla Upgraded S-Curved Rib Bunkie Board, Queen 60 by 80 inches, 10 mm (ASIN B0F6N4L28H). The table gives a weight of 15.12 pounds and several size options. The bullets give 600D Oxford fabric construction, S-curved ribs for bend resistance, a silicone grip underside, ventilation openings and a queen size of 60 by 80 inches. Best for: adding firm support under a mattress on a weak or wide-gapped frame. Watch out: it has curved ribs, and the Nest warranty above excludes curved or flexing slats; if your mattress maker has a similar rule, a curved board may not count as acceptable support.
BaiNong Queen Metal Bed Frame Center Support, 58 to 68 inch adjustable, 3 pack (ASIN B0G1HRLX48). The table gives a weight of 10.41 pounds, a size of 58 to 68 inches, metal and a rating of 450 kilograms. The bullets give a 3 pack crossbar support system rated for 1,000 pounds, an adjustable width of 58 to 68 inches and leg height adjustable from 10 to 15.7 inches. Best for: adding a center support to a queen frame that lacks one. Watch out: 450 kilograms is 992 pounds by our conversion (450 times 2.20462), not 1,000; the listing states both, which agree within about 1 percent.
How the three compare
| Product | What it is | Size | Weight | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sintuff | Replacement wood slats | 29.53 x 1.97 x 0.39 in | 1.81 lb per pack | Not stated |
| Voyla | Bunkie board (fabric, ribs) | 60 x 80 in | 15.12 lb | Not stated |
| BaiNong | Center support set | 58 to 68 in wide | 10.41 lb | 450 kg (about 992 lb) |
How to choose
If one slat broke. Measure its length, width and thickness, and buy the same. A pack that says 29.53 inches long fits a frame with 29.5 inch slat seats, not an 80 inch slat.
If the mattress sags in the middle. Check for a center support; a queen frame without one is the likely cause, and the Nest warranty requires one.
If the gaps are too wide. Add slats until the gap works out to the maker’s limit, using the formula above.
If the frame itself is weak. A bunkie board changes the surface but not the frame; read your mattress warranty first.
Measuring your frame before you buy
Four measurements decide whether a replacement part fits. Measure the slat seat length, which is the distance between the two side rails where a slat rests, and the width and thickness of an old slat. Count the slats you have. Then compare with the listing’s table, not with the title.
Example, with numbers that are our own assumptions: if the distance between your rails is 58.5 inches, two Sintuff slats of 29.53 inches laid end to end total 59.06 inches, which is 0.56 inch longer than the gap and would have to overlap at the center support. If the distance is 59.5 inches they fall 0.44 inch short of touching, which is fine over a center beam. If the gap is 56 inches, they do not fit. A piece of paper and a tape measure answer the question in two minutes.
For the thickness, 0.39 inch (the table value) and 0.32 inch (the size line) are different in a slat seat that is milled to fit; compare with your old slat.
Mistakes to avoid
Buying slats by “queen” alone. Length and thickness decide the fit.
Counting by pack. The Sintuff pack says 5 in one place and 10 in another.
Using a curved board under a foam mattress. Check the warranty first.
Forgetting the floor contact. A center support needs to reach the floor, in the Nest rule; the BaiNong legs adjust from 10 to 15.7 inches.

Frequently asked questions
How many slats does a queen bed need?
It depends on slat width and the gap your mattress maker allows. For 1.97 inch slats and an 80 inch length, 15 slats give a 3.6 inch gap and 17 give 2.91.
How far apart should bed slats be?
Nest Bedding’s warranty says no more than four inches. Other makers differ, so read your warranty.
Does a queen need a center support?
Under the Nest warranty, a queen or larger needs a rigid center support that reaches the floor.
Can I replace one broken slat?
Yes, if you match the length, width and thickness. The Sintuff pack is 29.53 by 1.97 by 0.39 inches, but its listing also gives 29.3 by 0.32 by 2.
Is a bunkie board the same as slats?
No. It is a board or fabric panel laid over a frame to give a flat surface.
Are curved slats a problem?
For a Nest mattress, curved or flexing slats void the warranty. Check your own maker’s rule.
