Quick answer
A three seater is not a size, it is a claim. The three listings we read on Amazon on 2026-10-01 range from 78 to 83.7 inches wide, which works out to 26 to 27.9 inches per seat, and along a 12 ft wall they cover 54.2 to 58.1 percent of it. Compare the sofas on width per seat and seat height, and distrust any table that prints a size of 0.39 inches. The three below also differ in kind: a velvet framed sofa, and two boneless foam sofas that sit at 11 and 15.8 inches, below the 17 to 19 inch range POVISON’s sofa-comfort guide gives for most adults.
We have not tested these sofas, and every size and material is the seller’s number. For a wider look at two-piece and three-piece sets, see couch and sofa set; for what makes a sofa comfortable, see comfortable sofa.
What three seater means
Sellers count seats by cushions, by arm-to-arm width or by marketing. A listing can call a 70 inch sofa a three seater and an 84 inch sofa a three seater. The honest test is width divided by the number of seats, and then your own idea of how much room each person needs.
There is no standard seat width. Our planning estimate for a comfortable adult seat is roughly 24 to 28 inches between the arms, which is our own guess from the listings below and not a published rule, so measure your own household before you decide. Overall width includes the arms, so the usable width per seat is less than the figures here.
Worked example: width per seat and wall share
A 12 ft wall is 144 inches. Width per seat is the overall width divided by three, and the wall share is the width divided by 144.
| Listing | Overall width | Width per seat | Share of a 144 in wall |
|---|---|---|---|
| CGTENBS velvet 3-seater | 83.7 in | 27.9 in | 58.1% |
| 78 in boneless convertible, beige | 78 in | 26.0 in | 54.2% |
| 79 in boneless convertible, black | 79 in | 26.3 in | 54.9% |
The arithmetic is 83.7 / 3 = 27.9, 78 / 3 = 26.0 and 79 / 3 = 26.3, then 83.7 / 144 = 0.581, 78 / 144 = 0.542 and 79 / 144 = 0.549. The span between the widest and the narrowest is 83.7 − 78 = 5.7 inches in total, or 1.9 inches per seat. That is small, so the real difference between these three is not width but seat height and construction.
OROA, a furniture retailer, suggests 30 to 36 inches for main walkways and keeping main seats within about 8 feet of each other for conversation. A sofa that covers more than half the wall leaves less room for side tables and a path, so check the whole wall, not just the sofa.
Seat height and construction
Here is where the three split.
| Listing | Seat height | Overall depth | Overall height |
|---|---|---|---|
| CGTENBS velvet | not listed | 33 in | 27.2 in |
| 78 in boneless, beige | 11 in | 35 in | 26 in |
| 79 in boneless, black | 15.8 in | 33.5 in | 25.6 in |
POVISON’s guide gives about 17 to 19 inches of seat height for most adults. The beige sofa’s 11 inch seat is 6 inches below the bottom of that range (17 − 11 = 6), a floor-level seat, and the black sofa’s 15.8 inches is 1.2 inches below it. The velvet sofa lists no seat height in the rows we read, and its size table prints 0.39 inches for depth, width and height, which is a data error, so its size comes from the bullet that says 83.7 inches wide, 33 inches deep and 27.2 inches high.
A low seat is a style as well as a defect. It suits lounging and a floor-level look, and it is harder to stand up from, which matters for knees and backs.
Weight, delivery and doors
The velvet sofa is 88.2 lb, and the two boneless sofas are 65 lb and 66 lb. Both boneless listings say no assembly is needed; the beige one says it ships vacuum-compressed, and the black one carries a tip to let it fluff up after unpacking. Furniture Academy says the entryway has to be wider than at least one of a piece’s depth, height or diagonal depth. The U.S. Access Board gives 32 inches as a minimum clear width at doorways on accessible routes, which we use as a worst case when you have not measured. Against 32 inches, the heights of 27.2, 26 and 25.6 inches all clear by 4.8, 6 and 6.4 inches. These are finished-sofa sizes, not box sizes.
Fabric and care
The velvet sofa is polyester velvet with button tufting and gold-colored iron legs, per its bullets. The two boneless sofas are corduroy, and the black listing’s table says to wipe with a damp cloth. The beige listing’s bullets mention premium corduroy and a dual-layer foam. A velvet pile and a corduroy rib both show wear in different ways, and the care label of the exact sofa is the rule.
Three three-seaters read on 2026-10-01
CGTENBS Velvet Sofa Couch for Living Room, Upholstered Tuxedo Arm 3-Seater with Golden Legs (B0H5C9FG3V). The bullets give 83.7 x 33 x 27.2 in (W x D x H), the table lists 88.2 lb and seating for three, and the cover is polyester velvet with button tufting and iron legs. Good if you want a framed look with metal legs. Keep in mind: the table’s size fields read 0.39 inches and its seat fields are nonsense, so rely on the bullet size and ask for a seat height.
Boneless Couch for Living Room, 3 Seater Convertible Sofa Bed in Box, Beige, 78″ (B0H9DR57HL). The table gives 35 x 78 x 26 in, 65 lb, a seat height of 11 in, a back interior height of 23 in and five throw pillows. The bullets describe corduroy over dual-layer foam, a folding multi-position design and vacuum-compressed, zero-assembly delivery. Good if you want a floor-level lounge. Keep in mind: an 11 inch seat is very low.
79″ Convertible Sofa Bed, 2-in-1 Oversized Boneless Couch with 3 Pillows and Side Pocket, Luxe Corduroy, Black (B0GXV3XGZ4). The table gives 33.5 x 79 x 25.6 in, 66 lb, a seat height of 15.8 in, three seat cushions and a wipe-with-damp-cloth care line. The bullets describe memory foam cut from a single block and a no-assembly, pull-out design. Good for a closer-to-standard seat on a boneless sofa. Keep in mind: 15.8 inches is still below the guide’s range.
How to choose
- Divide the width by three, and compare it with how you sit.
- Check the seat height against 17 to 19 inches, and decide if low is a feature.
- Ignore a table that prints 0.39 inches or repeats the overall height as a seat height.
- Compute the wall share before you order.
- Check the narrowest door against the largest piece.
You may not need a three seater. A loveseat plus an armchair can seat three in a less rigid layout, which can fit a room with a door in the way better than one long sofa. For two-seat options, see small couch.
Mistakes to avoid
- Counting seats instead of inches.
- Trusting a table with impossible numbers.
- Ignoring seat height on a boneless sofa.
- Letting the sofa cover more than half the wall without checking walkways.
- Skipping the care label.
Bottom line
Width per seat tells you more than the word three seater. Of the three above, the velvet is the widest at 27.9 inches a seat, the black boneless is the closest to a standard seat height at 15.8 inches and the beige is the lowest at 11 inches. Ask the seller for a seat height before you rely on any of them.
Frequently asked questions
How wide is a three seater sofa?
The three here are 78 to 83.7 inches wide. There is no standard, so compare width per seat.
Do three adults fit on a three seater?
That depends on the person and the sofa. The three here give 26 to 27.9 inches per seat, which is our own comparison and not a seating standard.
What is a good seat height?
POVISON’s guide gives about 17 to 19 inches for most adults. The boneless sofas here are lower.
How much wall does a three seater take?
On a 12 ft (144 in) wall, 54.2 to 58.1 percent for the three listings above.
Will a three seater fit through a door?
Compare the piece’s depth, height or diagonal depth with the narrowest opening. A 32 inch clear width is a sensible worst case.
