Real leather or faux leather

All three listings we read give faux leather: the 30 inch ottoman says “PU faux leather” and a faux leather top and frame covering, the SNOWDROP title says “Modern Faux Leather” and the GRAINELL lists faux leather as its material. None of them is sold as genuine leather. That matches what a shopper often finds on a low-cost bench: the word “leather” in the search or the title does not mean the hide.

If you want genuine leather, you will need to search for it by name and check the material field, which should say leather and not “PU”, “faux” or “leather-look”. We did not find one in the results we opened.

The SNOWDROP listing contradicts itself on the cover: the title says faux leather and the bullets say velvet upholstery. If the cover matters to you, ask the seller which one you will get.

Length against your bed

An end of bed bench looks best when it is shorter than the bed width, so it sits inside the line of the mattress. A standard US queen mattress is 60 inches wide (a twin is 38 and a king 76). The 30 inch bench leaves 60 − 30 = 30 inches, or 15 inches either side if it is centered. The 40 inch SNOWDROP leaves 20 inches, 10 each side. The 42.13 inch GRAINELL leaves 60 − 42.13 = 17.87 inches, about 8.9 inches each side.

On a twin bed, which is 38 inches wide, a 40 or 42 inch bench would overhang. For a king bed, which is 76 inches wide, the 42 inch bench looks small. Which bench looks right is a matter of taste; the sums show the margins.

Depth and seat height

Depth is how far the bench sticks out into the room. The 30 inch ottoman is 15 inches deep. The SNOWDROP lists 40 by 14 by 17 inches, so it is 14 inches deep and 17 inches high. The GRAINELL lists 15.75 by 42.13 by 15.75 inches and a seat height of 15.55 inches. These are all shallow, which is fine for sitting to put on shoes, and too shallow to sit comfortably for long.

Seat height matters for sitting down and standing up. The 30 inch ottoman lists a seat height of 15 inches, the GRAINELL 15.55 inches and the SNOWDROP 17 inches overall. As our own planning estimate, most standard chairs are around 17 to 19 inches high, so these benches are low. A low bench is harder to stand from for people with stiff knees or hips.

Storage space

Two of the three are storage benches. The 30 inch ottoman lists an 81 litre hidden space and a 30 by 15 by 15 inch outer size. The GRAINELL lists interior dimensions of 34.65 by 13.58 by 11.22 inches, which is 34.65 × 13.58 × 11.22 ≈ 5,280 cubic inches, or about 5,280 × 0.01639 ≈ 86.5 litres. The SNOWDROP listing says “hidden storage” and gives reinforced hinges but we did not record an interior size.

A worked example with invented numbers. A queen comforter folded flat is perhaps 24 by 14 inches and 6 inches thick. As our own estimate, that fits the GRAINELL’s 34.65 by 13.58 inch floor, with 11.22 inches of height for one or two items. It would be tight in the 30 by 15 ottoman, because the inner space is smaller than the outer size, so a bulky item may not fit.

Weight rating

The SNOWDROP listing says it supports up to 330 pounds. The GRAINELL listing gives a 350 pound maximum. The 30 inch ottoman listing did not state a rating in the text we read. These are the sellers’ numbers and we have not verified them.

A longer bench carries two people, and the weight rating is for the whole bench. Two adults of 170 and 180 pounds total 350 pounds, so the GRAINELL has no margin at all in that case, and the SNOWDROP is already 20 pounds over. If more than one person will sit at once, choose a higher rating or sit one at a time.

Weight of the bench

The 30 inch ottoman weighs 11.8 pounds, the SNOWDROP weighs 20 pounds and the GRAINELL weighs 31.7 pounds. The lighter ones move easily, and slide when you sit down on a smooth floor, so check the feet.

The 30 inch ottoman folds flat, which saves space if you move often. The listing says you insert a base panel to set it up and remove it to collapse the ottoman, and that the top reverses to a coffee-table surface.

Frame and legs

The SNOWDROP has a wood frame, gold metal legs and reinforced metal hinges. The GRAINELL has a wood frame of engineered wood. The 30 inch ottoman has an MDF and foam frame under the faux leather. Legs lift the bench off the floor and make it look lighter. A solid base gives more storage but is harder to clean under.

Care of faux leather

Faux leather usually wipes clean with a damp cloth. It can crack where it is flexed, such as at the seams or where you sit. The 30 inch ottoman listing says it is waterproof PU leather. We have not verified any wear claims, and a seller’s claim of waterproof is not a guarantee.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not assume “leather” means leather. Do not forget to subtract the bench length from the bed width. Do not buy a bench for two people without checking the rating. And do not assume the storage size is the outer size.

Who should skip an end of bed bench

If your room is small, a bench at the foot of the bed may block the path. If you need a seat for putting on socks and shoes and you have stiff hips or knees, a taller chair is easier to stand from. If you want real leather, check the material line carefully or look beyond Amazon.
