Frame: aluminum, steel or wood

The frame decides how long the sofa lasts outside. Patio Productions’ buyer’s guide calls aluminum the best choice because it will not rust or corrode like steel, and it cautions against steel. A powder-coated steel frame can last a good while if the coating stays intact, and a chip lets rust start. That second half is our own reasoning, not something the guide says, so ask the seller how the frame is coated and how the leg ends are protected.

Wood is the third option. The Merax set in this guide is acacia wood, which the listing describes as a sturdy frame. The listing does not tell you how the wood is finished or whether it needs yearly oiling, so check that before you commit.

Wicker: HDPE or PVC

Wicker is a weaving style, and the plastic underneath matters. The same guide describes HDPE as the gold standard for outdoor wicker and says PVC can become brittle in sunlight. The share is the footprint divided by 11,520. Look at the Merax row with care: 50.2 by 29.25 inches cannot be a five-seat sectional, so the listing’s table probably describes one module. Treat the third row as one piece, not as the whole set, and ask for the layout drawing.

To check walking room, take the Ahomly set. Along the 96 in side of the patio the depth of 52 in leaves 96 − 52 = 44 in. OROA, an indoor furniture retailer, suggests 30 to 36 inches for main walkways, so 44 in clears that indoor guideline for a path past the sofa, though not by a large margin. The guideline is for living rooms, so use it only as a starting point outside.

Weight and wind

Weights range from 50 lb to 95.8 lb across the two wicker sets, and the Merax listing gives 100 lb for the item. Heavier sets move less in the wind, which is our reasoning and not a listed claim, and a lighter set may need weight added or a cover. The Vongrasig listing states a weight capacity of 600 lb for the set, which is a seller number.

Good for a small balcony, because the footprint is the smallest of the wicker pair. Keep in mind: assembly is required, and the cushions are 3 inches thick against 5.9 inches on the Merax. The listing says the product is not large and to be careful with the size.

Merax 5-Seater Acacia Wood Outdoor Sectional Sofa Set with Cushions, Beige (B0H1Q56SYT). The table gives 50.2 x 29.25 x 27.36 in, 100 lb and acacia wood with foam and waterproof fabric. The bullets describe a solid acacia frame, 5.9 inch water-resistant cushions, high backs and armrests and adjustable foot pads. Good if you prefer wood and thick cushions. Keep in mind: the listed size looks like one module, so the real footprint of five seats is larger and has to be confirmed.

Questions to send the seller

Listings for patio sets often skip the details that decide durability, so a short message before you order is worth it. Ask what the frame coating is and whether the leg ends have caps, whether the wicker is HDPE, whether the cushion foam dries quickly and whether a cover is included. Ask for the size of every piece and the layout drawing too. If the seller cannot answer, that is information about how the set will be supported later.
