Quick answer

A keyboard tray for a chair attaches to the chair itself, usually to the metal tube under the seat or to an armrest, and holds a keyboard in front of you. It is useful when your desk is too high, too thick to clamp a tray to, or when you work from a couch, a recliner or a gaming chair. The catch is fit: the clamp has to match your chair’s tube.

We read three Amazon listings on 2026-10-01: the VIVO chair-mounted keyboard tray MOUNT-KB08C (ASIN B0CL5L6DLD), a stainless steel arm mount from Noble Createaprototype (B098BCFTQ1) and the MagicHold keyboard stand (B06Y5JMHTZ). They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or installed any of them. All numbers come from the listings.

Check four things: the tube diameter the clamp fits, how far the arm reaches, the tray size and the load limit. If you want a desk-mounted tray instead, that is a different product; this guide is about trays that mount on the chair. For desks that are the wrong height, see desk chair adjustable height.

Why mount a tray on the chair

A desk-mounted tray needs a desk with a clear edge and enough space underneath. A chair-mounted tray moves with you and lets you recline, tilt or sit away from the desk with a keyboard in your lap. The listings pitch it for large screens, gaming and sitting at an angle.

The trade-off is that the tray is tied to the chair. If you spin the chair, the tray spins with it. If the chair’s mechanism or tube is not a standard round tube, the clamp may not fit.

Tube diameter: the first check

The VIVO KB08C listing says it attaches to “the bottom tube section (1.7 inches to 2 inches in diameter) of a standard height adjustable office chair”. The MagicHold listing says it mounts to a gas cylinder or column of “up to 1.96 inch diagonal thickness”, or to a round bar. The Noble listing says its stainless steel pipe is 25 millimeters in diameter, which is the arm tube, and it does not say in the part we read what chair tube it clamps to.

So measure your chair first. A tape wrapped round the tube gives the circumference; divide by 3.14 to get the diameter. As an example, a tube with a 5.5 inch circumference is 5.5 ÷ 3.14 ≈ 1.75 inches across, which is inside the VIVO’s 1.7 to 2 inch range. A tube of 2.3 inches would not fit that clamp. Chairs with a tapered or cased tube, or with a seat mechanism that sits low, may leave no room to clamp.

Reach and arm length

The VIVO listing gives an arm length of 18 inches and a total pole height of 25.3 inches, with height adjustment along a 12.5 inch top section of the pole. The Noble listing gives an arm extension of 400 millimeters, which is 400 ÷ 25.4 ≈ 15.7 inches. The MagicHold listing gives overall dimensions of 21 by 5 by 10 inches and does not state an arm length.

Arm length matters because it sets how far the keyboard sits from your body. Measure from your belly to where you want the keyboard and compare. As our own planning estimate, a keyboard roughly a forearm’s length from your body is a comfortable reach, but that is not a published standard, so use your own measurement.

Tray size

The VIVO tray is 26 by 11.8 by 0.5 inches. The listing says it fits “most standard and oversized keyboards”. A full-size keyboard with a number pad is often about 17 to 18 inches wide, which is our general expectation and not a number from these listings, so a 26 inch tray leaves room for a mouse beside it. The Noble listing gives overall dimensions of 4.72 by 17.32 by 7.48 inches and a depth of 44 centimeters, so its platform is narrower and may suit a compact keyboard better. The MagicHold listing gives 21 by 5 by 10 inches.

A worked example with invented numbers. Your keyboard is 17.5 inches wide and your mouse needs 4 inches beside it. On the VIVO tray, 26 − 17.5 = 8.5 inches remain for the mouse, enough with 4.5 inches to spare. On a tray 17.32 inches wide, the keyboard alone does not fit, so you would need a mouse position elsewhere.

Load limit

The Noble listing states a load capacity of 20 kilograms, which is 20 × 2.2046 ≈ 44.1 pounds, and also a “maximum weight recommendation” of 300 pounds in its product fields. Those two numbers do not describe the same thing: the 300 pound field probably describes the item’s rating on a different scale and is not a tray load. Treat 20 kilograms as the tray figure and ask the seller.

The VIVO and MagicHold listings did not state a tray load in the parts we read. A keyboard and mouse weigh a few pounds, but a laptop is heavier and the arm is a lever. If you plan to hold a laptop, ask the seller for a rating.

Tilt and movement

The VIVO listing mentions an adjustable tilt and a full 360 degree rotation, and says it suits left and right handed users. The Noble listing gives a forward tilt of 85 degrees, a backward tilt of 20 degrees, a left-to-right tilt of 45 degrees each way and 360 degree keyboard rotation. The MagicHold listing says the mouse tray attaches to the armrest of the chair.

Tilt is a convenience, but a platform that moves also moves while you type. Check that the joint locks.

Materials and weight

The VIVO tray is particle board and steel with a steel arm, and weighs 13.2 pounds. The Noble set is stainless steel with polycarbonate, and weighs 8.53 pounds. The MagicHold set is aluminum and weighs 7.39 pounds. A heavier tray is stable but pulls on the chair; a lighter one is easier to attach.

The weight is carried by your chair’s tube, and a plastic tube or a tube that is not fixed firmly can flex. Check the tube before you attach 13 pounds of tray.

Things the listings do not say

None of the three listings we read gives the minimum desk clearance or the amount of lateral movement, and only one gives a load. None says whether the tray clears an armrest. If you use a chair with fixed arms, check that the tray arm does not hit them.

The three listings we read

VIVO Black Office Chair Mounted 26 x 12 in Keyboard Tray, MOUNT-KB08C (ASIN B0CL5L6DLD). The listing gives a 26 by 11.8 inch tray, an 18 inch arm, a 25.3 inch pole, tilt and 360 degree rotation, fit for tubes 1.7 to 2 inches in diameter and a weight of 13.2 pounds. Good for: a large tray with a mouse space. Keep in mind: no tray load is stated and the clamp fits a limited tube range. The page showed an Add to Cart button. A newer VIVO model, MOUNT-KB18CP (B0FM4CMCRL), showed no Add to Cart button when we read it.

Noble Createaprototype Laptop Mouse Stand Mount, chair or round bar keyboard tray (ASIN B098BCFTQ1). The listing gives a 20 kilogram load capacity, a 400 millimeter arm, the tilt angles above, a stainless steel pipe of 25 millimeters and a weight of 8.53 pounds. Good for: a stated load and a wide range of tilt. Keep in mind: the 300 pound field conflicts with the 20 kilogram figure and the platform is narrow. The page showed an Add to Cart button.

MagicHold Computer Keyboard Stand Laptop Mouse Mount (ASIN B06Y5JMHTZ). The listing gives 21 by 5 by 10 inches, an aluminum build, a weight of 7.39 pounds and a clamp for a gas cylinder or bar up to 1.96 inches. Good for: a light mount for a gaming chair. Keep in mind: no load or arm length is stated, and when we read the page it showed no Add to Cart button and said only 1 was in stock.

Mistakes to avoid

Do not order before you measure the tube. Do not assume the clamp fits a gaming chair, which often has a cased column. Do not load a laptop on a tray with no stated rating. And do not buy a narrow tray for a full-size keyboard.

Who should skip a chair tray

If your problem is a desk that is too high, a desk-mounted tray or a height adjustable desk may be simpler. If your chair has a plastic or cased column, a chair tray may not clamp. If you want to type at a desk with a mouse, a normal desk and a well-set chair may be enough.

Frequently asked questions

Will a chair keyboard tray fit any office chair?

No. The VIVO tray lists a fit for tubes 1.7 to 2 inches in diameter and the MagicHold lists a maximum of 1.96 inches. Measure your tube first.

How do I measure my chair tube?

Wrap a tape round the tube and divide the circumference by 3.14. A 5.5 inch circumference gives about 1.75 inches.

How much can a chair keyboard tray hold?

One listing we read states 20 kilograms, about 44 pounds. The other two did not state a load.

Can I use one with a gaming chair?

Some listings say so, but gaming chairs often have a cased column, so check the tube.

Is a chair tray better than a desk tray?

It depends. A chair tray moves with you; a desk tray stays put and may be steadier.

Bottom line

Choose a keyboard tray for a chair by tube diameter, arm length, tray width and load rating. Of the three listings, the VIVO is the large tray with a narrow tube range, the Noble set is the one with a stated 20 kilogram load and the MagicHold is a light mount with few numbers. Measure your chair before you order.
