Quick answer
A kneeling chair replaces the flat seat with a tilted seat and a pair of knee pads, so your weight is shared between your seat and your shins. A Varier-style chair adds a curved, rocking base. It can feel very different from a normal chair, and it is not a swap-in for every desk or every body.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-10-01: the Varier kneeling chair (ASIN B094RBP575), the Luxton Home kneeling chair with extra padding (B089K5ZVVR) and a small wooden knee chair from MallVitally (B0DZNTNS8P). They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat on any of them. Every number below comes from the listings.
Before you buy, check four things: seat height against your desk, the floor space the rocking base needs, the weight rating and whether the chair has a backrest. If you want a normal chair with a footrest or a seat with a back, see comfortable work chair or most comfortable desk chair instead.
What a kneeling chair is
A kneeling chair has a seat that slopes forward and a knee rest below it. Instead of a 90 degree angle at the hips, the seat opens that angle, and the knees carry part of your weight. Some are rockers, with a curved base that moves as you shift. Others are fixed frames, sometimes with wheels.
The Varier listing calls its chair a “rocking knee stool” and says the “tilted seat opens the hips” and “eases lower back pressure”. Those are the seller’s claims. We have not verified them and we are not giving medical advice. If you have back pain, ask a clinician before changing how you sit. The listings also say you may feel some discomfort in the shins at first, so plan to use a kneeling chair for short stretches before using one all day.
Seat height and desk match
Seat height decides whether a kneeling chair works at your desk. The Varier listing gives a seat height of 20 inches. The Luxton listing gives 22 inches in its size line. The MallVitally listing gives 11 inches, which tells you it is a small stool or a child-size piece, not an office-height seat.
A kneeling chair sits you higher than your knees would normally be, so measure your desk first. As our own planning estimate, not a standard: subtract the seat height from your desktop height to see the gap you have to work with. A 29 inch desk and a 20 inch Varier seat leave 29 − 20 = 9 inches between the seat and the desktop. A 29 inch desk and an 11 inch seat leave 18 inches, which is too much for a typing posture unless you are very short. Your own numbers will differ, so measure your desk and your seated height before ordering.
The listings also give contradictory numbers. The Luxton page lists a height of 28 inches in one field and 22 inches in another, and shows a “seat depth” of 28 inches, which is the chair’s overall depth, not the seat. Treat the 22 inch seat height as the likelier figure and ask the seller to confirm before you order.
Footprint and rocking space
A rocker needs room to move. The Varier listing gives a depth of 31.1 inches and a width of 18.5 inches, so its footprint is 31.1 × 18.5 = 575.4 square inches, about 4 square feet. The Luxton chair is 28 by 16 inches, which is 448 square inches, about 3.1 square feet. The MallVitally chair is 10 by 12 inches, which is 120 square inches, but the listing’s own fields disagree (12 by 8 by 11 in the size line), so check it.
Add rocking room on top. The listings do not say how far the Varier base travels, so as a planning estimate leave a couple of inches behind the chair and make sure your legs are not pinned under a desk panel or a drawer. If your desk has a modesty panel or a central drawer, check the knee space before buying.
Weight rating
The Varier listing gives a maximum recommended weight of 243 pounds. The Luxton and MallVitally listings give no weight rating in the part we read. A kneeling chair puts part of your weight on the knee pads and part on the seat, so the rating applies to the whole chair, not to either pad.
A worked example with invented numbers. A 200 pound user and a chair rated 243 pounds leaves 243 − 200 = 43 pounds of headroom, which is 43 ÷ 243 ≈ 17.7 percent of the rating. If you are at 230 pounds, the headroom is only 13 pounds. If a listing gives no rating, you cannot do this check, so ask the seller.
Backrest or no backrest
A kneeling chair with no back asks your core to do the work. The Varier listing mentions a removable backrest, which lets you add support at the end of the day. The overall height of 36.2 inches on that listing probably includes the back. The Luxton and MallVitally chairs are backless in the parts we read.
If you plan to use one all day, a backrest is worth looking for. If you only want a second seating position for an hour at a time, a backless chair is lighter and takes less floor.
Materials and weight of the chair
The Varier listing gives a lacquered ash plywood frame and a seat in recycled material, and a chair weight of 20 pounds. The Luxton chair is wood with a foam seat and weighs 13.75 pounds. The MallVitally chair is wood with a foam seat and weighs 15 pounds, which is a lot for its listed 10 by 12 by 11 inch size.
Weight matters because you will move a rocking chair around. Under 20 pounds is easy to lift, and none of these is heavy.
Other knee chairs we saw
Two other listings came up while we read the search page. The DRAGONN by VIVO kneeling chair (B073ZN7B52) lists a 250 pound maximum, an 18.4 pound weight, a metal base and a height range of 21 to 28 inches in its bullets, but its “seat height” field says 79 centimeters, which is about 31 inches and does not match. It also showed no Add to Cart button when we read it. An adjustable chair with three height positions (B09TR668V5) lists 33 by 16.5 by 20.5 inches and 19.8 pounds, and says it supports 250 pounds in its title, but its “seat depth” field says 3.4 inches, which cannot be right. The lesson: kneeling-chair listings are full of mismatched fields, so always ask the seller which number is the seat height.
The three listings we read
Varier Ergonomic Kneeling Chair, Rocking Knee Stool for Home Office Desk (ASIN B094RBP575). The listing gives 31.1 by 18.5 by 36.2 inches (D by W by H), a seat height of 20 inches, a listed weight of 20 pounds, a 243 pound maximum recommendation, a lacquered ash plywood frame and a removable backrest. Good for: a rocker with a backrest option and a stated weight rating. Keep in mind: it has the biggest footprint of the three and the seat depth is listed as 10.5 inches, a small seat. The page showed an Add to Cart button.
Luxton Home Ergonomic Kneeling Chair with Extra Padding (ASIN B089K5ZVVR). The listing gives 28 by 16 inches of footprint, a seat height of 22 inches, a listed weight of 13.75 pounds and a wood frame with a foam seat. Good for: a lighter, smaller rocker. Keep in mind: the height fields conflict (28 and 22 inches) and no weight rating is shown in what we read. The page showed an Add to Cart button.
MallVitally Adjustable Kneeling Chair, Wooden (ASIN B0DZNTNS8P). The listing gives 10 by 12 by 11 inches, an 11 inch seat height, a listed weight of 15 pounds and a wood frame with foam. It is sold in a wood color with pads. Good for: a very compact stool. Keep in mind: at 11 inches it is not a desk-height seat, and the size fields disagree. The page showed an Add to Cart button.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not buy by looks. A kneeling chair is a different way of sitting, so check the seat height and the floor space first. Do not plan to sit in one for eight hours on the first day. Do not trust a single height field when two fields disagree. And do not assume a small stool such as the 11 inch listing will reach a standard desk.
Who should skip a kneeling chair
If you need back support for long hours, a regular chair with lumbar support is a safer choice; see back support for office chair. If you have knee, shin or ankle problems, a kneeling chair puts load on exactly those joints, so ask a clinician first. If your desk has a deep drawer or panel, the knees may not fit.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Varier kneeling chair?
Varier is a brand. Its listing describes a rocking knee stool with a tilted seat and a removable backrest, with a seat height of 20 inches.
How tall should a kneeling chair be for my desk?
It depends on your desk and your body. Subtract the seat height from your desktop height to see the gap. A 29 inch desk and a 20 inch seat leave 9 inches, which is our own planning estimate and not a standard.
Can I use a kneeling chair all day?
The listings say some discomfort is normal at first. Start with short sessions and ask a clinician if you have joint or back problems.
What weight can a kneeling chair hold?
The Varier listing says 243 pounds. The other two listings we read did not give a rating, so ask the seller.
Do kneeling chairs have backs?
Some do. The Varier listing has a removable backrest. The other two we read do not appear to.
Bottom line
Choose a kneeling chair by seat height, footprint, weight rating and backrest, and expect some adjustment time. Of the three listings, the Varier is the one with a stated weight rating and a removable back, the Luxton is the lighter rocker with conflicting height fields and the MallVitally is a small stool that will not reach a desk. Ask the seller for the numbers the page leaves out.
