Quick answer

Decide the mattress first. A crib-size toddler bed takes the crib mattress, which the CPSC describes as at least 51 5/8 by 27 1/4 inches. A twin floor bed takes a twin mattress of 38 by 75 inches and grows with the child. A foam floor bed has no mattress frame. Two of the three listings below state a weight limit of 250 pounds; the foam bed states none in its table. Read the label on the bed, and follow the maker’s age and weight guidance.

What the CPSC says about toddler beds

The CPSC business-guidance page for toddler beds, which we opened on 2026-10-01, describes a toddler bed as a bed sized to accommodate a full-size crib mattress with minimum dimensions of 51 5/8 by 27 1/4 inches, for a child not less than 15 months of age and weighing no more than 50 pounds. It says the rule covers guardrails, entrapment openings (partially bounded openings and mattress support system openings) and labels with the maker’s name, contact details, model and date of manufacture. Detailed dimensions are in the referenced ASTM F1821 standard. That is the published rule for crib-size beds. A twin-size floor bed is bigger than that, and the page does not say how it treats them, so look at the label and instructions on any bed you buy.

Worked example: how much bigger than the mattress?

A crib mattress is 51.625 by 27.25 inches (51 5/8 and 27 1/4). A twin mattress is 38 by 75 inches (Amerisleep). Here is each bed’s size minus the mattress it holds:

  • Crib-size Dream On Me Finn toddler bed, 53 by 30 inches: 1.375 inches longer (53 minus 51.625) and 2.75 inches wider (30 minus 27.25).
  • BOVTE twin floor bed, 77 by 41.46 inches: 2 inches longer (77 minus 75) and 3.46 inches wider (41.46 minus 38).
  • Foam floor bed, 58.7 by 34.3 inches: 7.075 inches longer than a crib mattress and 7.05 wider (58.7 minus 51.625, 34.3 minus 27.25), which is a different product, with no mattress-and-frame fit to check.

The small margins on the first two are the frame and the fence. Whatever the bed, the mattress must fit snugly inside, so buy the mattress size the label states.

Worked example: floor space

The BOVTE twin floor bed is 77 by 41.46 inches, which is 3,192 square inches or 22.2 square feet (divide by 144). The PVWIIK twin floor bed with a roof frame is 77 by 44.8 inches, 3,450 square inches or 24.0 square feet. The foam floor bed is 58.7 by 34.3 inches, 2,013 square inches or 14.0 square feet. In a 10 by 10 foot room, 100 square feet, the twin floor beds take 22 to 24 percent of the floor and the foam one 14 percent.

Guardrails: the design differences

All-round fence. The BOVTE listing gives four guardrails, a 21.5 inch high guardrail and a small removable fence door, with 7 removable plywood slats and a center support bar. The PVWIIK listing gives full surrounding safety fences and a reserved entrance so a child can enter and leave alone. Both say pine.

No frame. The foam bed is all high-density foam with no hard edges, according to its bullets, and it folds into a kids’ sofa. It has no guardrails to measure, so the floor is the safety feature.

Crib-size with rails. The Finn has two reinforced side rails, a 50 pound limit and a statement that it meets ASTM and CPSC standards, which is the maker’s claim.

The listing numbers do not say how high the fence stands above the mattress, so measure it with the mattress in place. Say the BOVTE’s frame is 21.46 inches tall, its slats sit 6 inches off the floor and the mattress is 5 inches thick (all assumptions): the fence then stands about 10.5 inches above the mattress (21.46 minus 6 minus 5). Your numbers will differ, so measure.

We have not tested these. The numbers are from the Amazon measurement tables and bullets. The first two show “cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location” from Vietnam, so their cart buttons are hidden; that is a shipping limit from where we opened them.

PVWIIK twin Montessori floor bed with roof frame, natural. The table gives 77 inches long, 44.8 wide, 66.1 high, 22 pounds and a maximum weight recommendation of 250 pounds. The bullets give a gable-style roof frame, full surrounding fences, a solid pine structure, a reserved entrance for independent entry and exit and a space-saving design. Best for: a child who will use it for years, as it takes a twin mattress. Watch out: the roof makes it 66.1 inches tall, which matters under a window or a sloped ceiling.

BOVTE twin Montessori floor bed with removable slats and fence door, pine. The table gives 77 inches long, 41.46 wide, 21.46 high, 44 pounds and a maximum weight recommendation of 250 pounds. The bullets give a 21.5 inch high guardrail, seven removable plywood slats, a center support bar, four guardrails, a removable fence door and delivery in a single package. Best for: a low, simple bed that doubles as a play space. Watch out: at 44 pounds it is twice as heavy as the roof model.

Soft foam toddler floor bed, foldable, no assembly. The table gives 58.7 by 34.3 by 23.6 inches and 18 pounds. The bullets say it is all high-density foam with no hard edges, arrives assembled and converts to a kids’ sofa. Best for: a transition bed or travel. Watch out: the listing states no weight limit or age range in the table, so check the page text.

Mistakes to avoid

Assuming a twin floor bed falls under the crib-size rule. The CPSC page describes beds sized for a crib mattress; read the label on yours.

Using the wrong mattress. The mattress must match the label’s size, not the nearest size.

Skipping the room height. A roof frame is 66.1 inches tall.

Forgetting the doorway. A 77 inch bed ships in a long box.

Treating a weight limit of 250 pounds as an age guide. The CPSC describes crib-size toddler beds for children up to 50 pounds.

When you may not need a floor bed

If your child is still in a crib, there is no need to move yet. If you want a bed that lasts to school age, a standard toddler bed or a low twin bed frame can work with rails added. For a bigger child sharing a room, see the bunk beds guide.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy a crib-size or a twin floor bed?

A crib-size bed reuses the crib mattress, 51 5/8 by 27 1/4 inches, and takes about 10 square feet of floor. A twin floor bed takes 22 to 24 square feet but lasts longer, because it holds a 38 by 75 inch twin mattress.

Does a toddler floor bed need a mattress?

A frame bed does; the foam floor bed is the mattress itself. For a twin floor bed, buy the mattress size on the label, 38 by 75 inches for a twin.

How big is a toddler bed mattress?

The CPSC describes crib-size toddler beds as sized for a crib mattress of at least 51 5/8 by 27 1/4 inches.

What age is a toddler bed for?

The CPSC rule covers children not less than 15 months of age and weighing no more than 50 pounds. Follow the maker’s label.

Is a floor bed safe?

We cannot judge safety from a listing. Check the label, the guardrails and the maker’s age and weight limits.

How much room does a twin floor bed take?

The two we read take 22.2 and 24.0 square feet, against 14.0 for a foam floor bed.

What mattress does a twin floor bed take?

A twin, 38 by 75 inches per Amerisleep, but check the bed’s label.
