What a kids sofa is, and is not

The three products here are foam furniture for toddlers and kids: a modular play set, a fold-out couch and lounger, and a 12-piece modular couch. They are soft, light and low, and the pieces often attach with hook-and-loop fasteners so they can be rebuilt as a fort or a slide. They are not small versions of a framed sofa.

They are also not made for infant sleep. The NIH Safe to Sleep campaign says couches and armchairs are particularly dangerous when an adult falls asleep on them while feeding or comforting a baby, and that soft surfaces such as couches, sofas and memory foam are not appropriate for infant sleep because they raise the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related deaths. Seat height and seat depth for a child

An adult sofa has a seat height of about 17 to 19 inches. A child’s feet need to reach the floor, or a seat that is too high will leave legs dangling. Measure your child sitting on a hard chair: the distance from the floor to the back of the knee is K, and the distance from the back of the hip to the back of the knee is T.

The Cubby listing gives its seat height as 25 centimeters, and 25 / 2.54 is 9.84 inches. A seat depth much longer than T makes a child slouch or perch on the edge, which is where a back cushion helps. As a rule of thumb, our own and not a published standard, a seat depth within about 2 inches of T and a seat height at or below K are a good fit.

How much floor does it take

Worked example in a 10 by 12 ft playroom (120 x 144 in, or 17,280 sq in). Footprint is the listed width times depth.

• Delta set: 40 x 40 = 1,600 sq in, which is 9.3 percent of the room (1,600 / 17,280).
• Tiny Land: 18.8 x 28 = 526.4 sq in, which is 3.0 percent.
• Cubby Couch: 28.5 x 68.5 = 1,952.3 sq in, which is 11.3 percent.

All three are small. The modular sets can also be rebuilt, so the footprint changes with the layout. Keep walking space around them: the OROA retailer guide suggests 30 to 36 inches for main walkways, which applies to the room’s path rather than to a play area.

Weight and stability

These sofas are light: 8 lb for the Tiny Land, 14.2 lb for the Delta set and 35.3 lb for the 12-piece Cubby Couch. Light is good for tidying and bad for sliding. The Tiny Land bullets mention reinforced hook-and-loop fasteners to keep the sections attached, and the Cubby bullets mention hook-and-loop on the back of the backrest to keep it steady. Check that the pieces will not shift on a hard floor if a child climbs them.

Foam and covers

The Cubby listing says its foam is CertiPUR-US, and the covers unzip for machine washing on a gentle cold cycle with air drying. The CertiPUR-US program certifies foam for low emissions and the absence of chemicals such as formaldehyde, but its site does not claim anything about durability or comfort. The Tiny Land listing describes a polyester corduroy cover over 3.5 inch thick high-resilience foam, and the Delta listing describes a velvety soft slipcover over a foam core. Ask the seller about washing if the cover is not described.
