Quick answer
A deep seat sofa is one where the seat depth, from the front edge of the cushion to the back cushion, is large, not the overall depth of the whole piece. Overall depth includes the back and the arms’ frame, so a sofa can be 37 inches deep overall and still seat you on only 25. Check the seat depth, and then check what share of the overall depth it makes up.
In the three sofas we read on Amazon on 2026-10-01, seat depth runs from 25 to 26.35 inches while overall depth runs from 31.99 to 37.5, so the share is 82 percent for one and 67 percent for another. We have not tested these sofas, and every size is the seller’s. For a general size check, see sofas and couches.
Seat depth and overall depth are different numbers
Listings often fill both with the same figure. In earlier guides we saw “seat depth” equal to overall depth on one sofa, and a seat height equal to the overall height on another. When both fields hold the same number, treat the seat depth as unknown.
When the numbers differ, their gap tells you something. The difference, overall depth minus seat depth, is how much depth goes to the back and the frame. A small gap means a thin back and more of the footprint is seat. A large gap means a thick back or wide arms.
The ratio check
Worked example, using the stated seat depth and overall depth:
| Sofa | Seat depth | Overall depth | Gap (overall − seat) | Seat share of depth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Curved V-shaped boucle sofa | 26.34 in | 31.99 in | 5.65 in | 82.3% |
| BBTJOINT leather-look sofa | 26.35 in | 37.38 in | 11.03 in | 70.5% |
| Modway Holland | 25 in | 37.5 in | 12.5 in | 66.7% |
The arithmetic is the overall depth minus the seat depth, then the seat depth divided by the overall depth. The V-shaped sofa gives you the most seat for the floor it uses: it is 5.5 inches shallower overall than the Holland and still has 1.34 inches more seat depth. That makes it the better choice if the floor is tight. The Holland and the BBTJOINT put about 11 to 12.5 inches into the back and frame.
For comparison, the other sofas we read in this series fall between 59 and 76 percent. Their ratios (seat depth over overall depth) are: Studio Living Harrington 65.1 percent (20.5 over 31.5), TOV Porter 58.8 percent (22 over 37.4), Pasargad Vicenza 65.2 percent (23.62 over 36.22), and Yellow Light PH.4 75.6 percent (24.41 over 32.28). So the V-shaped sofa’s 82 percent is the highest we have seen, which makes it worth confirming the figure with the seller.
A leg-length test
Seat depth is only deep or shallow relative to you. A simple test is to sit on a firm chair with your back flat against the back, and measure from your lower back to the crease behind your knee. Call that length L. Our own rule of thumb, not a published standard: a seat depth within about 4 inches more than L suits upright sitting, and anything beyond that suits lounging with a pillow behind you.
Worked example with two people, assuming L = 19 in and L = 23 in:
- Holland: 25 − 19 = 6 in over, or 25 − 23 = 2 in over.
- V-shaped sofa: 26.34 − 19 = 7.34 in over, or 26.34 − 23 = 3.34 in over.
- BBTJOINT: 26.35 − 19 = 7.35 in over, or 26.35 − 23 = 3.35 in over.
For the person with L = 23, all three are within the 4 inch range, so they should sit upright comfortably. For the person with L = 19, all three are beyond it, so they would need a pillow or would sit with legs curled. If two people with different L share the sofa, the seat depth will suit one better than the other.
Seat height matters as much
A deep seat that is also low is hard to stand up from. The listings give seat heights of 18 in (Holland), 16.99 in (V-shaped sofa) and 15.47 in (BBTJOINT). The difference between the highest and the lowest is 18 − 15.47 = 2.53 in. If anyone using the sofa has stiff knees or hips, choose the higher seat or add a firmer cushion.
Floor needed
Deep seats are not free in a small room. At 37.5 inches overall the Holland uses 85.5 x 37.5 = 3,206.3 sq in; the V-shaped sofa at 88.99 x 31.99 uses 2,846.8 sq in; the BBTJOINT at 91 x 37.38 uses 3,401.6 sq in. The V-shaped sofa uses 359.5 sq in less than the Holland, a difference of about 11 percent (359.5 / 3,206.3). For the spacing between sofa and table and for walkways, see the method in sofas and sectionals.
Three deep-seat sofas read on 2026-10-01
Modway Holland 85 Inch Minimalist Curved Back Sofa, Taupe Chenille. The table gives 37.5 x 85.5 x 32 in, 127 lb, a 25 in seat depth, an 18 in seat height and three seat cushions. The bullets describe a curved back, a chenille-like fabric and ball throw pillows. Good for a soft, rounded look with a middle seat depth. Keep in mind: the gap between seat and overall depth is 12.5 inches, so you pay a lot of floor for 25 inches of seat.
Curved Sofa with Bouclé Upholstery, Beige, V-Shaped 3-Seater. The table gives 31.99 x 88.99 x 28.98 in, 145 lb, a 26.34 in seat depth, a 16.99 in seat height, a 900 lb capacity and a wood frame with mortise-and-tenon joints. The upholstery row says 50,000 double rubs and no assembly. Good for the most seat per inch of floor. Keep in mind: a 50,000 double-rub claim is a seller’s number; at BTOD’s rule of thumb of 3,000 double rubs a year it would imply about 16.7 years (50,000 / 3,000), and the test measures abrasion only.
BBTJOINT Minimalist Brown Leather Sofa, 2-Tone, 3-Seater. The table gives 37.38 x 91 x 25.98 in, 145 lb, a 26.35 in seat depth and a 15.47 in seat height. The bullets say leather, but the material row says bonded leather, spot clean only. Good for deep, low lounging. Keep in mind: bonded leather tends to crack and peel according to Leather Honey, and the 15.47 in seat is the lowest here; see leather sofa.
Choosing a deep seat sofa
- Read the seat depth field. If it matches the overall depth, ask the seller.
- Compute the seat share. In our own rule of thumb, above about 75 percent suggests a thin back and below about 65 percent suggests a heavy frame; neither is a published standard.
- Measure your own L and compare.
- Check the seat height against the people who will use it.
- Check the floor footprint against your room.
- Look at the back. A deep seat with a low back may not support your shoulders; the BBTJOINT is 25.98 in high overall.
You may not need a deep seat. If you mostly sit upright to read or work, a seat depth near your L serves better, and a shallow sofa like the Harrington’s 20.5 in leaves more floor.
Mistakes to avoid
- Confusing seat depth with overall depth.
- Ignoring seat height. A deep, low seat is hard to leave.
- Skipping the leg test. Depth is relative to your body.
- Trusting a rub count without the test and the fabric.
- Forgetting the footprint. Deep sofas use more floor.
Bottom line
Look for the seat depth, check its share of the overall depth, and compare it with your own leg length and the seat height. If the listing gives the same number for both depths, ask before buying. For a rounded shape see curved sofa.
Frequently asked questions
What is the seat depth of a deep seat sofa?
There is no single standard. The three sofas above list 25 to 26.35 inches, and a shallower sofa such as the Harrington lists 20.5. Compare it with your own leg length.
Is overall depth the same as seat depth?
No. Overall depth includes the back and frame. In our examples the gap is 5.65 to 12.5 inches.
How do I know if a deep seat sofa is too deep for me?
Sit on a firm chair against the back and measure from your lower back to the crease behind your knee. If the sofa’s seat depth is much larger than that, you will need pillows or sit sideways. That is our own rule of thumb.
Is a deep seat sofa good for a small room?
Only if the overall depth fits. The V-shaped example has a deep seat in 31.99 inches overall; the Holland needs 37.5 inches for 25 inches of seat.
Does a higher rub count mean a better sofa?
It means better abrasion resistance. BTOD notes the test does not cover stain resistance, softness or colorfastness, and the 50,000 figure is a seller’s claim.
