Quick answer
Velvet is a fabric with a dense cut pile, and what matters for a sofa is the fiber, the abrasion rating and the care instructions, not the word “velvet”. In the three velvet sofas we read on Amazon on 2026-10-01, none states a rub count, and we saw a cleaning line on only one. One says “performance velvet” and stain-resistant without a number or a test method.
We have not tested any of these sofas. Every size and material below is the seller’s, and where listing fields disagree we say so. If you want a hard-wearing sofa, ask for the rub count before you order. For other fabric and material guides see leather sofa and sofas and couches.
What velvet is
Wikipedia describes velvet as a woven fabric with a dense, even pile that gives it a soft feel. It is made on a loom that weaves two layers at once and cuts them apart to form the pile. Velvet can be made from silk, cotton, wool and other natural fibers, and also from synthetics such as polyester, nylon and viscose. The listing should say which fiber it is; in the parts of the three pages below that we read, none names one.
Two facts from that page matter for living with it. First, velvet is difficult to clean because of its pile. Second, the pile can be cut to lie up or down, which changes how much light it reflects and how deep the color looks. Crushed-velvet finishes are made by pressing the pile in different directions, so pressure and direction change how velvet looks.
What a rub count tells you, and what it does not
Upholstery sellers often quote a “double rub” count from the Wyzenbeek test, where a machine rubs a cotton duck cloth back and forth over the fabric. Each back-and-forth is one double rub. BTOD, a furniture retailer, lists residential thresholds of 15,000 or more for heavy duty, 9,000 to 15,000 for medium duty and 3,000 to 9,000 for light duty, and says about 3,000 double rubs corresponds to one year of use. Treat that as a retailer’s rule of thumb, not a guarantee.
Worked example, using that one-year rule:
- 3,000 double rubs is about 1 year (3,000 / 3,000).
- 9,000 is about 3 years.
- 15,000 is about 5 years (15,000 / 3,000).
- 30,000 is about 10 years.
The same source adds a caution that matters for velvet: the test measures abrasion only. It does not measure stain resistance, softness or colorfastness, and it does not tell you how a pile will crush. So a high rub count helps, but a listing that says “stain-resistant” still needs to say how it was checked.
What the three listings say about fabric
None of the three Amazon pages we read gives a rub count. The Modway Liora listing calls its cover “performance velvet” and “stain-resistant” and says it resists everyday wear, but gives no test or number. The TOV Porter listing says velvet upholstery over a kiln-dried wood frame and gives no fiber that we saw. The Pasargad Vicenza listing says velvet and adds that the sofa wipes clean of stains and dust with a soft, damp cloth, which is the only care line we saw. Because Wikipedia notes velvet is difficult to clean, ask the seller what cleaning method the maker approves before you try water.
The sizes, side by side
Worked example, using the listed width and depth:
| Sofa | Width x depth x height | Footprint (width x depth) | Listed weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| TOV Porter | 88.6 x 37.4 x 32.7 in | 3,313.6 sq in | 109 lb |
| Modway Liora | 87 x 37.5 x 32.5 in | 3,262.5 sq in | not in the table we read |
| Pasargad Vicenza | 89.37 x 36.22 x 30 in | 3,237.0 sq in | 153 lb |
The footprints are within 77 sq in of each other (3,313.6 minus 3,237.0 is 76.6), so room fit will be similar. Height and weight differ more: the Vicenza is 2.7 inches lower than the TOV (32.7 minus 30) and 44 lb heavier (153 minus 109). To check each against your room, use the spacing method in sofas and sectionals.
Check the seat width the listing gives
Only two listings give a seat width, so test whether the numbers add up. The TOV table gives an overall width of 88.6 in and a seat interior width of 72.8 in. The difference, 88.6 minus 72.8 is 15.8 in, would be two arms of about 7.9 in each. That is plausible. For three people, 72.8 / 3 is about 24.3 in per seat.
The Vicenza listing gives 89.37 in overall, a seat width of 68.5 in and an arm width of 7 in. Two arms at 7 in is 14 in, so the span between the arms should be about 89.37 − 14 = 75.37 in, not 68.5 in. The 6.87 in gap means one of the fields is off or the arms are wider than listed. For three people, 68.5 / 3 is about 22.8 in per seat. Ask the seller before relying on either figure.
Three velvet sofas read on 2026-10-01
TOV Furniture The Porter Collection Velvet Upholstered Sofa, Forest Green. The table gives 37.4 x 88.6 x 32.7 in, 109 lb, a 22 in seat depth, a 19 in seat height and a 27.2 in arm height. The bullets mention beech legs, a kiln-dried wood frame, piped stitching and minor assembly. Good for a traditional shape with a standard seat height. Keep in mind: one bullet calls it the “Oslo Sofa” while the title says Porter, so the copy was probably reused, and the listing gives no fiber or rub count.
Modway Liora 87 Inch Stain-Resistant Performance Velvet Sofa, Chocolate Brown. The table gives 37.5 x 87 x 32.5 in, the bullets give 37.8 in deep and 32.7 in high, and they list pocket springs with zigzag coils and an 800 lb capacity. Good for a low-profile, mid-century look with a stain-resistant claim. Keep in mind: the depth and height differ between the table and the bullets by 0.3 in and 0.2 in, which is small, but no weight is stated, and the listing says some assembly is required.
Pasargad Home Vicenza Collection Velvet 3-Seater Tufted Sofa, Fuchsia. The table gives 36.22 x 89.37 x 30 in, 153 lb, a 23.62 in seat depth and a 16.25 in seat height. The bullets describe deep button tufting, multi-layer high-density foam, a solid wooden frame and no assembly. Good for a bold color and no assembly. Keep in mind: the seat height is 2.75 in lower than the TOV’s 19 in, and the seat width does not reconcile with the arm width, as shown above.
Choosing a velvet sofa
- Ask for the fiber and the rub count. If the seller will not state them, assume the fabric is for light use.
- Ask what the maker says about cleaning. Wikipedia notes velvet is hard to clean, so water is not always the answer.
- Check seat height against the people using it. A 16 in seat is lower than a 19 in seat.
- Run the seat-width sum above, so you know what each person gets.
- Look at the color in your own light. Pile direction changes how deep a shade looks.
You may not need velvet at all. If the sofa will be a pet or snack spot, a tightly woven fabric with a stated rub count of 15,000 or more is easier to judge.
Mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by the word “performance”. Without a test method or number it is a claim.
- Trusting a wipe-clean line without confirming the maker’s care code.
- Treating a high rub count as a stain rating. It measures abrasion only.
- Ignoring the seat height. It changes how easy it is to stand up.
- Skipping the pile. Dark velvet shows brush marks that light fabrics hide.
Bottom line
Choose a velvet sofa by fiber, rub count and care instructions, then check the size and the seat width in your room. When a listing leaves out the fiber and the rub count, ask. For a rounder shape, see curved sofa.
Frequently asked questions
Is velvet a good fabric for a sofa?
It can be, but it depends on the fiber, the rub count and the care. Wikipedia notes velvet is difficult to clean because of its pile. Ask the seller for the fiber and the rub count.
What is a good rub count for a velvet sofa?
BTOD, a furniture retailer, calls 15,000 or more double rubs heavy duty for residential use and 9,000 to 15,000 medium duty. These are retailer thresholds, not a standard, and none of the three listings above gave a count.
What does performance velvet mean?
It is a marketing term unless the seller gives a test method and number. The Modway Liora listing says stain-resistant but gives neither, so ask.
How do I clean a velvet sofa?
Follow the maker’s cleaning code. The Vicenza listing says to wipe stains and dust with a soft, damp cloth, but we did not see care instructions on the other two listings.
Why does velvet look different from different angles?
Velvet is a pile fabric and the pile can lie in different directions, which changes how much light it reflects. Pressing the pile down can leave visible marks.
