Quick answer
For a standard twin over twin bunk bed, plan on about 78 to 81 inches of length, 42 inches of width and 62 to 65 inches of frame height. The federal bunk bed rules say the tops of the guardrails must be at least 5 inches above the top of the mattress, so a 13 to 14 inch rail limits the mattress to about 8 to 9 inches. The CPSC’s label warns not to put children under 6 on the upper bunk. Measure the ceiling, the room length and the doorway before you order.
What the federal rules say
We opened two CPSC pages on 2026-10-01, a business-guidance page and the release announcing the bunk bed standard. They say:
- The tops of the guardrails must be no less than 5 inches above the top of the mattress.
- Bunk beds must be marked or labeled with the proper mattress size and thickness and with warnings for safe use; the label warns not to place children under 6 years on the upper bunk.
- A bed whose foundation underside is more than 30 inches above the floor must have guardrails on both sides, and the wall-side rail must be continuous.
- ASTM F1427 is the industry standard that adds design and performance requirements.
These are requirements on the manufacturer; the listing does not prove compliance. What you can do is read the label on the bed you receive and buy the mattress thickness it states.
Worked example: how thick a mattress the rail allows
Say the guardrail on the top bunk is 13.18 inches high, the figure in the Bonnlo listing. If the rail is measured from the top of the slats (the listing does not say where it is measured from), the 5 inch rule leaves 13.18 minus 5, which is 8.18 inches of mattress thickness at most. A 14 inch rail, as in the Grain & Grove listing, leaves 14 minus 5, which is 9 inches. A 10 inch mattress on either would break the rule by 1.82 and 1 inch. Read the bed’s label, which states the allowed thickness.
Worked example: ceiling and floor space
Say the ceiling is 96 inches (an assumption, so measure yours). The three beds below are 62.25 to 65 inches tall. The top of the frame is then 96 minus 65, which is 31 inches, below the ceiling for the 65 inch beds and 96 minus 62.25, which is 33.75 inches, for the 62.25 inch bed. The mattress and the sleeper sit above the frame top, so that gap is all the head and sitting room the top bunk has.
For floor space, take the Bonnlo twin over twin at 77.8 by 41.65 inches and the Grain & Grove twin over full at 80.75 by 57 inches. 77.8 times 41.65 is 3,240 square inches and 80.75 times 57 is 4,603 square inches, a difference of 1,363 square inches, or 9.5 square feet (divided by 144). In a 10 by 10 foot room (120 by 120 inches) the twin over twin leaves 120 minus 77.8, which is 42.2 inches at the foot, which is more than the 24 inches Amerisleep recommends.
Check the mattress fit
Amerisleep’s chart gives a twin mattress as 38 by 75 inches and a full as 54 by 75 inches. The Bonnlo twin over twin is 77.8 by 41.65 inches, so it is 2.8 inches longer (77.8 minus 75) and 3.65 inches wider (41.65 minus 38) than the mattress it holds. The Grain & Grove twin over full is 80.75 by 57 inches, so the bottom bunk is 5.75 inches longer (80.75 minus 75) and 3 inches wider (57 minus 54) than a full mattress. Those margins are the rails and the headboard. Use them to check that the mattress you plan to buy matches the size on the label of the bed.
Three bunk beds read on 2026-10-01
We have not tested these. The numbers are from the Amazon measurement tables and bullets. The Bonnlo listing shows “cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location” from Vietnam, so its cart button is hidden; that is a shipping limit from where we opened it.
Bonnlo metal twin over twin bunk bed with flat ladder. The table gives 77.8 inches long, 41.65 wide, 65 high and 72.6 pounds. The bullets give a 13.18 inch guardrail, flat ladder rungs with rubber covers, a steel frame and a lower bunk weight limit of 400 pounds. The table lists a maximum weight recommendation of 225 pounds, which conflicts with the bullet, so ask before you put an adult on the top bunk. Best for: a teen’s or a shared room that needs a light metal frame. Watch out: the weight figures.
Grain & Grove Bear twin over full bunk bed with storage drawers. The table gives 80.75 inches long, 57 wide and 62.25 high and a maximum weight capacity of 800 pounds. The bullets give 14 inch guardrails, two under-bed drawers, wooden slats and no box spring needed. Best for: a room that needs a bigger bed on the bottom and storage. Watch out: it is the widest of the three at 57 inches.
Max & Lily classic twin over twin bunk bed with trundle, blue. The bullets give a footprint of 81.5 by 42.5 by 65 inches, solid New Zealand pine and a limit of 400 pounds per sleeping surface, and say the bunks separate into two free-standing beds. The table gives 80 by 58 by 65 inches, which we read as the footprint with the trundle, but the listing does not say. Best for: a family that wants the option to split the beds later. Watch out: the size labels, so confirm the footprint.
How the three compare
| Listing | Length | Width | Height | Weight limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bonnlo metal | 77.8 in | 41.65 in | 65 in | 400 lb lower (bullets) or 225 lb (table) |
| Grain & Grove twin/full | 80.75 in | 57 in | 62.25 in | 800 lb |
| Max & Lily with trundle | 81.5 in (bullets) | 42.5 in (bullets) | 65 in | 400 lb per surface |
Mistakes to avoid
Ordering without measuring the ceiling. A bed of 65 inches in a room with a low ceiling or a ceiling fan leaves little space above the top bunk.
Using a thick mattress on the top bunk. The 5 inch rule means a 13 to 14 inch rail suits a mattress of about 8 to 9 inches or less.
Putting a child under 6 on the upper bunk. The CPSC label says not to.
Reading one weight figure. The Bonnlo listing states two.
Forgetting the ladder side. The ladder needs floor space too.
When you may not need a bunk bed
If the room has the ceiling height but you want the upper space for a desk, a loft bed uses the same height with no lower bunk. If the room is too low for a top bunk, two low beds or a trundle give the same sleeping count; see the guide to trundle beds for adults.
Frequently asked questions
How high must the guardrail on a bunk bed be?
The CPSC says the tops of the guardrails must be no less than 5 inches above the top of the mattress.
Can a child under 6 sleep on the top bunk?
The CPSC says the label warns not to place children under 6 years on the upper bunk.
How thick can the mattress on a bunk bed be?
Use the thickness on the bed’s label. As a check, a 13 to 14 inch rail minus the 5 inch minimum leaves about 8 to 9 inches if the rail is measured from the slats.
How much floor space does a bunk bed need?
The three beds we read are 77.8 to 81.5 inches long and 41.65 to 57 inches wide. Allow at least 24 inches of clearance at the foot, as Amerisleep suggests for beds.
How tall is a bunk bed?
The three we read are 62.25 to 65 inches tall, so a 96 inch ceiling leaves 31 to 33.75 inches above the frame.
