Quick answer

For a shorter person, a desk chair is right when two numbers are small enough: the seat height (so your feet rest flat on the floor) and the seat depth (so the front edge does not press behind your knees). Most chairs are made for an average adult, and a chair labeled “for short people” is not automatically lower or shallower. Look for a seat height and a seat depth in the listing, and compare them with your own measurements.

We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a small criss-cross chair proportioned for people 5 feet to 5 feet 6 inches tall, a leather chair titled for short people and a standard mesh chair with a 22.83 inch seat for contrast. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat in any of them. All numbers come from the listings.

Why short people need different numbers

OSHA says the seat should let your feet rest flat on the floor or on a footrest, and that a chair should be adjustable to fit the user. For a shorter person, the problem is usually that the lowest seat setting is still too high, so the feet dangle and the front edge of the seat presses the thighs.

A seat that is too deep causes a second problem: you either sit forward and lose back support or push back and press behind the knee.

Seat height

Measure from the floor to the back of your knee while wearing your usual shoes. That is your target seat height. Many listings give only one number, and it may be the lowest setting, the highest or the middle.

The HUANUO listing gives a seat height of 20.5 inches. The Marsail listing gives 22.83 inches. The leather chair titled for short people gives no seat height in the fields we read. So the title alone does not tell you whether it is low.

Seat depth

As our own planning estimate, not a standard, leave about 2 inches between the front of the seat and the back of your knee. Measure from the back of your hips to the back of your knee while sitting, and subtract the seat depth.

The listings give a seat depth of 18.9 inches for the HUANUO, 19.7 inches for the leather chair and 20.47 inches for the Marsail. All three are deeper than a short person may need, but the HUANUO is the shallowest.

Arms and the desk

Arms that do not flip up can stop a chair from sliding close to a desk, and for a shorter person, arms that sit too high push the shoulders up. The HUANUO has flip-up armrests that fold flat, adjustable from 90 to 180 degrees according to the listing. The leather chair has 90 degree flip-up padded armrests. The Marsail has 90 degree flip-up armrests.

If you cannot bring your forearms level with the keyboard without raising your shoulders, the desk may be too high. See what height should a desk be.

A footrest can fix height but not depth

A footrest raises your feet so that they rest flat when the seat is too high. It does not fix seat depth. The listings do not include footrests. If you need one, see office chair with footrest for ways to add one.

Recline and back

The HUANUO listing describes a recline of 90 to 105 degrees and a seat back interior height of 17.3 inches, which is a low back suited to a smaller person. The Nexthro listing describes a honeycomb relief backrest and a PU waist pillow. The Marsail listing describes a lumbar support that adjusts vertically and horizontally.

A high back is not useful to a shorter person if the headrest sits above their head.

Weight ratings

The listings give 330 pounds for the HUANUO, 400 pounds for the Nexthro and 300 pounds for the Marsail. These are the sellers’ figures, and we have not verified them. A small person does not need a high rating, but it does suggest a stronger base.

The three listings we read

HUANUO Criss Cross Office Chair with Adjustable Armrests, small, deep green (model HNOFC64). The listing gives 26.77 by 24.02 by 36.22 inches, a seat height of 20.5 inches, a seat depth of 18.9 inches, a seat back interior height of 17.3 inches, a listed weight of 31 pounds, a 330 pound maximum recommendation, corduroy upholstery and a recline of 90 to 105 degrees. The listing says it is proportioned for users 5 feet to 5 feet 6 inches tall. Good for: a shorter person who wants a small chair and may sit cross-legged. Keep in mind: the seat height is one number and not a range, and the wide base takes floor space. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

Nexthro Leather Office Chair Swivel Lumbar Support for Short People, brown (model BS-7140). The listing gives 20.9 by 25.6 by 42.7 inches, a seat depth of 19.7 inches, a listed weight of 28.9 pounds, a 400 pound maximum recommendation, faux leather, an extra PU waist pillow and 90 degree flip-up padded armrests. Good for: someone who wants a padded leather-look chair with a lumbar pillow. Keep in mind: the overall height of 42.7 inches is tall, and no seat height is given. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

Marsail Ergonomic Mesh Office Chair with Adjustable Lumbar Support (model MSOC23B-US). The listing gives 20.47 by 19.69 by 52.75 inches, a seat height of 22.83 inches, a seat depth of 20.47 inches, a listed weight of 28.7 pounds, a 300 pound maximum recommendation, a lumbar that adjusts vertically and horizontally and 90 degree flip-up armrests. Good for: an average-height person, and useful here as a contrast. Keep in mind: its seat height and depth are the highest of the three. From the site owner’s Vietnam delivery address the page said it could not be shipped there, so we could not see an Add to Cart button; that is a geographic limit, not proof of no stock in the United States.

A worked example

These numbers are invented. A shorter person measures 16.5 inches from the floor to the back of the knee, wears shoes that add 1 inch (target seat height 17.5 inches) and has a hip-to-back-of-knee length of 16.5 inches.

Seat height. The HUANUO’s 20.5 inches is 20.5 − 17.5 = 3 inches too high. The Marsail’s 22.83 inches is 22.83 − 17.5 = 5.33 inches too high. The Nexthro gives no number.

Footrest. To rest the feet flat, the person would need a footrest about 3 inches high with the HUANUO and about 5.3 inches with the Marsail.

Seat depth. Using our 2 inch planning gap, the ideal depth is 16.5 − 2 = 14.5 inches. The HUANUO at 18.9 inches leaves a gap of 16.5 − 18.9 = −2.4 inches, the Nexthro at 19.7 inches gives −3.2 inches and the Marsail at 20.47 inches gives −3.97 inches. All three run past the knee, so the person would sit forward of the backrest or use a lumbar cushion.

The example shows that “for short people” in a title does not guarantee a low seat: for this person, none of the three is ideal, and the HUANUO is the closest on both numbers.

Red flags in listings

A title that says “for short people” with no seat height or depth, a single seat height with no range, and a size line for the packed box are signs to ask. Also check whether the lowest setting is stated, because a range that begins at 18 inches is very different from one that begins at 21.

Who should skip a chair and change the desk instead

If your chair is fine and your desk is too high, a footrest or a lower or adjustable desk may be the better fix. If your feet dangle by more than a few inches, consider a chair with a stated low minimum height, a stool or a footrest. For very small rooms, see best office chairs for small spaces.

Frequently asked questions

What seat height should a short person look for?

One that reaches your knee height with shoes, so your feet rest flat. Measure from the floor to the back of your knee.

Does a chair for short people have a lower seat?

Not necessarily. One listing we read is titled for short people but gives no seat height. Check the number.

What seat depth is right for a short person?

One that leaves about 2 inches behind your knee, by our estimate. The listings we read give 18.9 to 20.47 inches.

Can a footrest fix a chair that is too high?

It fixes height but not depth. A chair that is too deep will still press behind your knees.

Do I need a special chair or a different desk?

If your forearms cannot reach the keyboard without raising your shoulders, the desk may be too high.

Bottom line

Choose the best desk chair for short people by seat height and seat depth, in that order, and treat a title as a hint only. Of the three listings above, the HUANUO is the small chair with a stated 20.5 inch seat and 18.9 inch depth, the Nexthro is titled for short people with no seat height and the Marsail is the standard chair that shows why the numbers matter. Measure your knee height and hip-to-knee length before ordering.
