Quick answer
A desk chair with a headrest adds a padded support behind your head and neck. It helps when you lean back to read, think or take a call, and it does little while you lean forward to type. The headrest only works if it reaches your neck, so check how far it adjusts in height and tilt. Then check the same fit numbers as for any chair: seat depth, lumbar range and weight rating.
We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a high-back mesh chair with a 2D headrest that tilts 45 degrees and rises 2.8 inches, a mesh chair with a 3D headrest and a 125 degree tilt and a mesh chair with a 2D headrest and a 22 inch seat depth. They are examples of what to compare, not a ranking. We have not tested or sat in any of them. All numbers come from the listings.

What a headrest does and does not do
A headrest supports the back of your head when you recline, giving it a place to rest during a break. It does not hold you in a good typing posture, because when you sit upright to type your head sits forward of the chair.
The federal workplace safety agency OSHA describes good chair features as a backrest that conforms to the natural curve of the spine with adequate lumbar support, a seat that lets your feet rest flat on the floor or a footrest and soft armrests, and it advises trying chairs before buying. The quick tips we read do not mention headrests, so treat a headrest as an extra and not a substitute for those basics.
Headrest adjustments
A headrest is useful only if it lines up with your neck. Look for two adjustments: height (up and down) and tilt (angle). The Marsail listing gives numbers: a 2D headrest with a 45 degree tilt and a 2.8 inch height adjustment. The Freepub listing describes a 3D headrest, meaning it adjusts in three directions, but gives no numbers. The TRALT listing describes a 2D adjustable headrest with no numbers.
If a listing does not say how far the headrest moves, ask. A headrest with only a half inch of movement may miss your neck.
Overall height and your head
A chair with a headrest is tall. The Marsail is listed at 51.4 inches, the TRALT at 50 inches and the Freepub at 48 inches. A taller person benefits from a high back, while a shorter person may find the headrest sits above their head and does nothing.
Check the space too. A tall chair can hit a window sill or a shelf if you push it back, and it may not fit under a low desk with its back raised.
Seat depth
As our own planning estimate, not a standard, leave about 2 inches between the front of the seat and the back of your knee. The listings give a seat depth of 19.3 inches for the Marsail, 17.7 inches for the Freepub and 22 inches for the TRALT. That 4.3 inch spread is wide, so a headrest does not make a chair fit you if the seat is the wrong depth.
Tilt and recline
A headrest matters most if the chair reclines. The Freepub listing describes a 125 degree tilt and 90 degree adjustable armrests. The Marsail listing describes a Class 3 gas lift and a 3.15 inch cushion. The TRALT listing does not give a tilt range in the text we read.
A recline with adjustable tension lets you lean back without falling. Check whether the tilt locks at several angles.
Lumbar and cushion
The Marsail listing gives a lumbar that adjusts 2.4 inches in height. The TRALT listing describes an independent lumbar support and an extra-thick, high-density foam seat. The Freepub listing describes adjustable lumbar support and memory foam and sponge fill.
A headrest does not replace lumbar support. A chair with a headrest but no adjustable lumbar can leave your lower back unsupported.
Weight ratings
The listings give 300 pounds for the Marsail, 350 pounds for the Freepub and 330 pounds for the TRALT. These are the sellers’ figures, and we have not verified them.
Mesh and armrests
All three are mesh chairs. The TRALT listing says its armrests are durable PP plastic with a smooth surface that wipes clean. The Freepub has flip-up armrests, and the Marsail has adjustable armrests.
Mesh breathes. The listings do not describe the headrest material.
The three listings we read
Marsail Ergonomic Office Chair with Lumbar Support and 2D Headrest (model MSOC28B). The listing gives 27.6 by 19.7 by 51.4 inches, a seat height of 21.3 inches, a seat depth of 19.3 inches, a listed weight of 34.8 pounds, a 300 pound maximum recommendation, a lumbar adjustable 2.4 inches in height, a headrest with a 45 degree tilt and 2.8 inches of height adjustment, a 3.15 inch cushion and a Class 3 gas lift. Good for: someone who wants a stated headrest and lumbar range. Keep in mind: the listing has the lowest weight rating of the three. From the site owner’s Vietnam delivery address the page said it could not be shipped there, so we could not see an Add to Cart button; that is a geographic limit, not proof of no stock in the United States.
Freepub Ergonomic Office Chair, mesh with 3D headrest (model W603). The listing gives 26.4 by 24 by 48 inches, a seat depth of 17.7 inches, a seat back interior height of 25.5 inches, a listed weight of 26.5 pounds, a 350 pound maximum recommendation, a 125 degree tilt, flip-up armrests, an adjustable lumbar, memory foam and sponge fill and a 1-year warranty. Good for: a shorter person who wants a headrest and a shallow seat. Keep in mind: the seat height field shows 45.3 inches, which is not a seat height, and the headrest’s range is not stated. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
TRALT Office Chair with Headrest Support (model 005-1). The listing gives 22 by 25 by 50 inches, a seat depth of 22 inches, a listed weight of 26 pounds, a 330 pound maximum recommendation, a 2D adjustable headrest, an independent lumbar support, a thick foam seat and PP plastic armrests. Good for: a taller person who needs a deep seat. Keep in mind: the headrest range is not stated, and the size line shows 34 by 25 by 23 inches in another field, which is not the chair. The page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.
A worked example
These numbers are invented. A person measures 19 inches from the back of the hips to the back of the knee. When they recline, the point of the neck that needs support is 30 inches above the seat. The headrest on a chair sits at 28 inches above the seat at its lowest setting.
Headrest reach. The person needs the headrest to rise 30 − 28 = 2 inches. The Marsail’s 2.8 inch range covers that with 0.8 inch to spare. The Freepub and TRALT give no range, so we cannot say.
Seat depth. Using our 2 inch planning gap, the ideal depth is 19 − 2 = 17 inches. The Freepub at 17.7 inches leaves a gap of 19 − 17.7 = 1.3 inches. The Marsail at 19.3 inches gives 19 − 19.3 = −0.3 inch, so the seat edge reaches the knee. The TRALT at 22 inches gives 19 − 22 = −3 inches and is too deep for this person.
Weight. A 280 pound person is under the Marsail’s 300 by 20 pounds, the TRALT’s 330 by 50 pounds and the Freepub’s 350 by 70 pounds.
The example shows that the headrest is the last check. For this person only the Freepub’s depth fits, but its headrest range is unknown.
Red flags in listings
A headrest called “adjustable” with no range, a size line that shows the packed box and a seat height that equals the overall height are signs to ask. Also watch for a headrest that is a clip-on cushion and not part of the chair, which some listings use.
Who should skip a headrest
If you sit forward to type most of the day, a headrest will rarely touch your head. If your neck or shoulders hurt, see a clinician and read best office chair for neck and shoulder pain. If you are short, the headrest may sit above your head. If your desk is low, a tall back may collide with shelves.
Frequently asked questions
Is a headrest good for a desk chair?
It helps when you lean back and does little while you type. It is an extra, not a substitute for lumbar support and the right seat depth.
How far should a headrest adjust?
Enough to reach your neck when you recline. One listing we read gives 2.8 inches of height and 45 degrees of tilt.
Do I need a high back chair?
If you want a headrest, yes. A taller person benefits more from a high back.
What does a 2D or 3D headrest mean?
The number of directions it adjusts, such as up and down and tilt. Check the listing for actual ranges.
Can a headrest fix neck pain?
A chair is not a treatment. If pain is persistent, speak with a clinician.
Bottom line
Choose a desk chair with a headrest by headrest range, seat depth and weight rating, in that order of importance after the basics. Of the three listings above, the Marsail states its headrest and lumbar ranges, the Freepub is the shallow-seat chair with a 125 degree tilt and the TRALT is the deep-seat chair with no stated ranges. Measure your hips-to-knee length before you order.
