Quick answer

“Sofa” and “couch” mean the same piece of furniture, and the word does not tell you whether it will suit your room. Four numbers do: overall width against your wall, overall depth against your walkway, seat depth, and seat width per person. Compare those four before you compare colors, and read the title, the bullets and the table together, because the three often disagree.

In the three sofas we read on Amazon on 2026-09-30, overall widths run from 78.7 to 89 inches, and seat depths from 20.5 to 25 inches where the listing states one. We have not tested any of them, and all sizes are the seller’s numbers. For a shape decision between a straight sofa and an L-shape, go to sofas and sectionals; for smaller two-seaters see loveseat.

Sofa, couch and loveseat: does the word matter?

In everyday use they are interchangeable. Retailers tend to call a two-seater a loveseat and a three-seater a sofa, but the sizes overlap: a loveseat sofa bed we read is 71.5 inches wide, while the Harrington “sofa” below is 78.7 inches, only 7.2 inches wider. Ignore the label and read the width.

What does matter is how the seat is built. A sofa with three separate cushions sits differently from one with a single long bench cushion, and the listing will say which. Of the three below, one states three seat cushions, one states a single cushion, and one does not say.

The four numbers that decide fit

Overall width. This is the number for your wall. Measure the wall, subtract the sofa, and see what is left for end tables, a lamp or a door swing. Worked example on a 12 ft (144 in) wall: the 89 in sofa leaves 55 in, the 85.5 in sofa leaves 58.5 in, and the 78.7 in sofa leaves 65.3 in. If you want two 20 in end tables (our assumption), that leaves 15, 18.5 and 25.3 inches respectively. The last one is the only one that keeps a comfortable gap; the first is nearly wall to wall. For table sizing see end tables for living room.

Overall depth. This decides walkway and delivery. The listings give 31.5, 36.2 and 37.5 inches. A 6 inch difference is easy to miss in a photo and obvious in a small room.

Seat depth. This decides how you sit. A shallow seat suits upright sitting; a deeper one suits lounging and curling up. The listings in this group give 20.5 inches and 25 inches, and the third gives a figure we explain below.

Seat width per person. This is the one almost nobody checks, and you can work it out from the listing.

Work out seat width per person

Take the overall width, subtract both arm widths, and divide by the number of cushions. Only one of the three listings gives an arm width, so we use it as the model.

The Studio Living Harrington lists a 78.7 in overall width and a 5.51 in arm width. Subtract 2 x 5.51 = 11.02 in to get 67.68 in of seating span. The listing does not give the cushion count, so assume three. Dividing by three gives 22.56 in per seat. The same table lists a 22.8 in seat interior width, and 3 x 22.8 = 68.4 in is within 1 inch of the 67.68 in span, which supports the assumption.

Is 22.56 inches enough? That depends on the people, and we do not have a published standard to cite. As a planning estimate only, we treat about 22 inches as snug and 24 inches or more as roomy. By that measure the Harrington sits at the snug end for three adults.

Try the same sum on the other two, and label the assumption. If the 85.5 in Modway Holland had arms as thick as the Harrington’s (5.51 in, an assumption because the listing gives no arm width), each of three seats would be (85.5 − 11.02) / 3 = 24.83 in. The 89 in Modway Leif has one long cushion, so the same assumption gives (89 − 11.02) / 3 = 26.0 in per person if three people share it. These are estimates, and the listing does not state them.

Three sofas read on 2026-09-30

Studio Living Harrington 80.3″ Sofa, Microfiber. The table gives 31.5 x 78.7 x 32.7 in (D x W x H), 82.5 lb, seat depth 20.5 in, seat height 19 in and arm height 24 in. The bullets describe button-tufted rolled arms, thick seat cushions, polyester microfabric and a wood frame, and the title mentions pocket coil comfort and easy assembly. Good for a smaller living room that needs three seats. Keep in mind: the title says 80.3 in while the table says 78.7 in, so confirm which measurement the seller used; the 20.5 in seat depth is the shallowest of the three.

Modway Holland 85 Inch Minimalist Curved Back Sofa, Taupe Chenille. The table gives 37.5 x 85.5 x 32 in, 127 lb, seat depth 25 in, seat height 18 in and three seat cushions. The bullets describe a curved back, sloping arms, a soft chenille-like fabric and ball throw pillows. Good for someone who wants a softer, rounded shape. Keep in mind: the 37.5 in depth is the largest of the three, and the listing gives no arm width, so you cannot work out seat width per person from the page.

Modway Leif Performance Velvet Upholstered Sofa, 89 Inch. The table gives 36.2 x 89 x 29.1 in and 132 lb, with one seat cushion. The bullets describe a tuxedo silhouette with a tight back, a stain-resistant performance velvet and a deep bench seat. Good for lounging and for a room with a long wall. Keep in mind: the table shows “Seat Depth 36.2 in” and “Seat Height 29.1 in”, which are the same numbers as the overall depth and height, so those two fields look mislabeled. The real seat depth and seat height are not stated.

Where listing numbers disagree

This happened in all three listings, so it is worth a short checklist.

  • Compare the title width with the table width. The Harrington title says 80.3 and the table says 78.7.
  • Look for copied numbers. If “seat depth” equals “overall depth”, as on the Leif, the field was probably filled in by mistake.
  • Check the units. Some sellers list inches for one field and centimeters for another.
  • Prefer the bullets when they give a full size statement such as width by depth by height. Sellers usually write those by hand.
  • If two fields still disagree, ask the seller or use neither number in your plan.

What the materials words tell you, and what they do not

Upholstery words describe the look more than the wear. “Microfiber” and “polyester” name a fiber, “chenille” and “velvet” name a weave or pile, and “performance” is a marketing term unless the listing says how it was tested. The Leif says stain-resistant, but nothing on the page says how it was checked, so treat that as a claim to ask about, not a fact.

Frame words work the same way. “Wood frame” does not say whether it is solid wood, plywood or engineered board. “Pocket coil” and “sinuous spring” name a suspension type, not how long it lasts. When a listing does not say, you learn nothing by guessing.

For leather and leather-look upholstery the wording matters a lot more; see leather sofa.

A short checklist for any sofa

  1. Wall length minus sofa width is at least 40 inches if you want end tables.
  2. Overall depth plus the coffee table gap and walkway fits your room depth (see the spacing method in sofas and sectionals).
  3. Seat depth is stated by the seller, and it is less than the overall depth.
  4. You can calculate the seat width per person, or the listing states it.
  5. The title, bullets and table agree on width.
  6. Upholstery type is named, and the care instructions are on the page.
  7. The delivery path is measured, including the diagonal depth.

If three or more items fail, choose a different listing before you look at colors.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by the number of seats in the title. A “3-seater” ranges from about 79 to 89 inches here.
  • Trusting one field. Several fields on these pages are wrong or copied.
  • Forgetting the wall. A sofa that fits the floor but leaves no room for a lamp or table feels cramped.

Bottom line

Decide with four numbers: width against the wall, depth against the walkway, seat depth, and seat width per person. When a listing does not state one of them, ask before you buy. If you want a bed as well, compare bed with couch.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a difference between a sofa and a couch?

In modern use, no. Both describe an upholstered seat for several people. Retailers sometimes use “loveseat” for a two-seater, but sizes overlap, so compare the width in inches.

How wide is a standard sofa?

There is no single standard. The three listings above range from 78.7 to 89 inches wide, and other sofas fall outside that range. Measure your wall and work backward.

How much space should I leave between a sofa and the coffee table?

OROA, a furniture retailer, suggests 14 to 18 inches and 30 to 36 inches for main walkways. These are design guidelines, not building rules.

What is seat depth and why does it matter?

Seat depth is the distance from the front edge of the seat to the back cushion. A shallow seat suits upright sitting and a deep one suits lounging, so it changes comfort more than color does.

Can I trust the dimensions on Amazon?

Mostly, but not blindly. All three sofas above had a mismatch or a copied field. Compare the title, the bullets and the table, and ask the seller when they disagree.
