Quick answer

A chair bed is a single seat that unfolds into a one-person bed. Whether it works depends on three things: the sleeping length (for your height), the sleeping width (for how you sleep), and the floor space you need to open it without blocking a door. The seat comfort matters less than you might think, because most people sit on it for a few minutes and sleep on it for hours.

We read three Amazon listings on 2026-09-30: a corduroy chair bed with a listed reclined length of 74.8 inches, a twin XL style floor sleeper with two connected foam seats, and a spring-and-foam chair bed listed at 75 by 30 inches. They show how much the category varies. We have not tested or slept on any of them, and the numbers below come from the listings.

If you want a full-size guest bed instead, see sofa beds for small spaces and folding sofa bed. If you want a chair that only reclines, see convertible sleeper chair for the comparison.

What a chair bed is

Sellers use the name for several designs. Some have a foam cushion that unfolds in two or three sections and lies on the floor. Others have a spring-and-foam cushion on a fold-out frame. A few are boneless floor seats that fold flat. All of them take less room than a sofa bed when closed, and all of them sleep one person.

The compromise is depth. A chair bed is thinner than a mattress, so it suits short stays: a guest, a nap, a child’s sleepover. For nightly sleep, compare it with a futon sofa bed or a proper sofa bed with storage.

Sleeping length: compare it with your height

The most important number is the length of the bed when open. One listing gives a reclined length of 74.8 inches. Another gives 75 inches for the bed. The third calls itself “Twin XL” but the fields we read show only its closed size of 27.9 by 39.4 by 14 inches, so we could not confirm its open length.

For comparison, one mattress chart lists a US twin mattress at 38 by 75 inches and a twin XL at 38 by 80 inches. A listing that calls itself “Twin XL” is not necessarily the same size as a twin XL mattress, so look for the actual length in the listing.

As a planning rule of our own, not a standard, add 6 inches to your height for your head and feet. A person who is 70 inches tall (5 ft 10 in) therefore wants about 76 inches. That is longer than the 75 inch bed below. A shorter guest will be fine.

Sleeping width

A width of 30 inches, which one listing gives, is narrow. A twin mattress is listed at 38 inches in the chart above, which is 8 inches wider than that chair bed. If you sleep on your side and move a lot, you will feel the edge. A folding bed that is 33.5 inches wide, as one listing gives for its seat width, is a little wider.

If the sleeper is a child or a small adult, the width is less critical. If it is a guest who is larger, think twice about a chair bed.

Floor space to open it

Measure the free floor where the chair bed will unfold. Add the bed length to any furniture you cannot move. The U.S. Access Board’s accessible-route guidance uses 36 inches as a minimum clear width for a route and 32 inches at short points such as doorways, and that is a helpful yardstick for the space you want to keep beside an opened bed. It is not a rule for homes.

Also check where the bed will rest when closed. A chair that is 33.5 inches wide and deep, like one listing gives, needs a corner with at least that much floor, and a doorway wide enough to carry it in. One listing gives a minimum required door width of 33.5 inches and another gives 39.4 inches.

Materials and firmness

A chair bed has little depth to spare, so the filling matters. One listing describes shredded foam that molds to the body. Another describes pocket springs with high-density foam, described as adult-grade support. A third describes foam seats and a foam backrest. A spring-and-foam bed may feel firmer, while shredded foam feels softer and compresses more.

Covers vary too. One listing gives a removable, machine-washable cover; another describes a slub cotton cover and a velcro backrest instead of buttons. If the bed will be used by children or pets, a washable cover is worth paying attention to.

Arrival and set-up

Two of the three listings we read describe vacuum packing. One says to let the foam breathe for 48 hours. The other says 24 to 48 hours. If a guest is arriving on Friday, open the box by Tuesday.

The three listings we read

MAXYOYO Folding Sofa Bed, Convertible Chair Bed with Pillow. The listing gives a single size, a reclined length of 74.8 inches, a seat width of 33.5 inches, a listed weight of 35.9 pounds, a corded fabric cover, shredded foam filling, a metal frame and a minimum door width of 33.5 inches. Good for: a short to average-height guest who needs a fold-out seat with a pillow and a headrest. Keep in mind: the page lists two different size sets (33.5 by 33.5 by 15.7 inches and 55.12 by 31.02 by 25 inches), so ask which is the bed and which is the package. This page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

COMAX Folding Sofa Bed, Boneless Sleeper Chair with Two Backrest Pillows. The listing gives a 4-in-1 design of two connected foam seats that unfold, a size line of “Twin XL with armrest,” a closed size of 27.9 by 39.4 by 14 inches, a seat depth of 22 inches, a seat height of 14 inches, a weight of 19.8 pounds and a removable washable cover. Good for: a room where you need the lightest option to carry and store. Keep in mind: the open length is not given in the fields we read, and at 14 inches the seat is low, which can be hard to stand up from. This page showed an Add to Cart button and an In Stock message.

HUGHEAVEN Folding Sofa Bed Chair, Convertible Sleeper Chair. The listing gives 75 by 30 by 9 inches, a weight of 30 pounds, pocket springs with high-density foam, a slub cotton cover, a velcro backrest, a built-in side pocket and a seat height of 18 inches. Good for: a guest who is taller and wants a firmer surface, or someone who finds an 18 inch seat easier to get out of. Keep in mind: a 30 inch width is narrow, and the listing noted “only 10 left in stock” on the day we read it, which can change. The page showed an Add to Cart button.

A worked example

These numbers are invented. A guest room is 9 feet by 10 feet (108 by 120 inches) and has a single bed-sized gap along the 120 inch wall with a door swinging into the room at one end.

If you open the HUGHEAVEN bed lengthwise along that wall, its 75 inch length leaves 120 − 75 = 45 inches of free wall. Its 30 inch width leaves 108 − 30 = 78 inches across the room. Both figures clear our 36 inch yardstick.

If you open it across the 108 inch wall instead, the length leaves 108 − 75 = 33 inches, which is below the 36 inch yardstick. The wall you choose matters more than the bed.

Now the guest. A guest who is 72 inches tall (6 ft) and uses our rule of height plus 6 inches wants a 78 inch bed. The 74.8 and 75 inch listings are 3.2 and 3 inches short. The guest can sleep diagonally or with feet off the end for a night, but not for a week.

Who should skip a chair bed

If guests stay for several nights, buy a real bed or a sofa bed. If the room has no floor to open the bed into, a pull-out or a wall bed is better. If you need a bed for someone with back pain, a thin foam cushion on the floor is unlikely to help. A futon or a daybed holds a thicker mattress.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a chair bed?

It varies by listing. Two we read were about 75 inches long when open. The third did not state an open length in the fields we read. Always compare the listed length with your height.

Is a chair bed comfortable enough to sleep on every night?

It is designed mainly for occasional use. A thin foam or spring-and-foam cushion is usually less supportive than a mattress. For nightly use, compare a futon or a daybed.

How much floor space does a chair bed need?

About the length of the bed when open plus a clear route. One listing gives 75 by 30 inches. Measure your room and keep a 32 to 36 inch path if you can.

Can an adult sleep on a chair bed?

Many listings describe adult use, but the width of 30 inches is narrow. Check the width and the weight limit, which some listings do not give.

Do chair beds arrive flat?

Often they arrive vacuum-packed. Two of the listings we read say to wait 24 to 48 hours for the foam to expand.

Bottom line

Choose a chair bed by sleeping length and width first, then by floor space. Of the three listings, the MAXYOYO has the most useful size data, the COMAX is the lightest and is missing its open length, and the HUGHEAVEN has the firmest construction and the narrowest width. Use it for guests and short stays, and buy a different bed for nightly use.
