Black floating shelves give a room a crisp line and hide the bracket, but the finish tells you nothing about how much a shelf holds. Of the three we compared, the Amazon Basics is a 3-pack of 15.8-inch pine shelves listed for up to 20 pounds each, the BAMEOS is a pair of 24-inch engineered-wood shelves listed at a 22 pound maximum and sold in black and white, and the Homeforia is a pair of 24-inch solid pine shelves 1.75 inches thick with a listed 50 pounds each. If you want white floating shelves or walnut floating shelves instead, note that we only read the black listings.

We have not tested these shelves. Sizes and features come from the Amazon listings, checked on September 30, 2026. Where a listing does not say, we say so.

Two listing details need care. The BAMEOS page lists 1.5 inches for thickness in one field and 2 inches for height in another, so treat it as roughly 1.5 to 2 inches. The Homeforia page says 50 pounds per shelf in its text and its specifications give a maximum of 50 pounds, but another field gives a minimum weight of 100 pounds, so plan on 50 and confirm with the seller before loading a shelf heavily.

Finish, load and depth

  • Black, white or walnut is a finish, not a strength. The load depends on the bracket, the wall fixing and whether screws reach a stud.
  • Depth. Five to 6.5 inches suits paperbacks, frames and plants. It is too shallow for most large hardcovers or a laptop.
  • Length and studs. A 24-inch shelf can reach more than one stud only if your studs line up. The listings do not state stud spacing.
  • Matte black shows dust and marks. Wipe with a dry cloth, as the listings suggest.
  • Other shelves. For an office wall, see our floating shelves for a home office guide. For enclosed storage, see our small bookcases with doors guide.

Will these shelves hold your items?

Enter the weight of what you want to put on one shelf, the depth of the deepest item, and the wall width you have. The tool checks the listed load, depth and length for each set. It uses 50 lb for the Homeforia.

Enter the load on one shelf, the depth of your deepest item and the wall width, in pounds and inches.

Uses listed loads, which assume correct installation into studs or suitable anchors. Follow the maker’s instructions.

    The three sets

Amazon Basics Wood Floating Wall Shelves, 3-Pack, Black

    15.8 x 5 x 1.8 in each – up to 20 lb each

The listing describes durable pine with a black finish, steel brackets and mounting hardware, FSC-certified, in a pack of three. The table gives 15.8 by 5 by 1.8 inches per shelf, a 1.8 inch thickness, 4.16 lb for the pack and a maximum weight of 20 pounds.

    • Good for: several small ledges for frames, small plants and décor.
    • Keep in mind: at 20 lb each and 5 inches deep it is for light items, and other colors are not stated in the text we read.

BAMEOS Floating Wall Shelves 24 x 6 Inch, Set of 2, Black

    24 x 6 in – 22 lb maximum – black or white

The listing describes shelves for bathrooms and small spaces at 24 inches wide and 6 inches deep, with a bracket that mounts first and a shelf that slides on and locks with a bottom screw, plus a hardware kit. It says the smooth matte surface comes in black and white. The table gives 22 lb maximum, 1.79 lb for the pair, and engineered wood.

    • Good for: a light-duty pair in a bathroom or bedroom, especially if you also want a white set.
    • Keep in mind: the thickness fields disagree, and 22 lb is a low load figure.

Homeforia 24 Inch Floating Shelves, Solid Pine, Set of 2, Black

    24 x 6.5 x 1.75 in – 50 lb each

The listing describes genuine solid pine with a matte-leaning black finish, 1.75 inches thick, a heavy-duty metal bracket hidden inside the shelf, and a rating of 50 lb per shelf. The table gives 6.5 by 24 by 1.75 inches, 5.5 lb for the pair, and pine with metal.

    • Good for: books, plants or towels on a stud-mounted wall, where the higher rating matters.
    • Keep in mind: one field lists a minimum of 100 lb, which contradicts the 50 lb figure, and other colors are not stated in the text we read.

How to choose black floating shelves

    • Start with the load. Use the tool above with the weight you really plan to put on one shelf.
    • Match depth to items. Measure the deepest item, not the average.
    • Wall. Find the studs and read the hardware list; drywall anchors carry less than studs.
    • Solid wood or engineered wood. The Homeforia is solid pine; the BAMEOS is engineered wood; the Amazon Basics is pine.
    • Want white or walnut? Look at the variations on each product page. Only the BAMEOS listing text says black and white.
    • Different job? See our floating shelves for a home office guide and narrow console tables guide.

    Frequently asked questions

Do black floating shelves hold less than white ones?

No. The color is a finish. The load depends on the bracket, the shelf and how it is fixed to the wall.

    Which set holds the most?

The Homeforia is listed at 50 lb per shelf, against 22 lb for the BAMEOS and 20 lb for the Amazon Basics.

    Are there white floating shelves?

The BAMEOS listing text says black and white. We did not verify white options for the other two.

Are there walnut floating shelves here?

We did not find a walnut option in the text we read for these three. Look at the variation list on the product page.

    How deep are they?

5 inches (Amazon Basics), 6 inches (BAMEOS) and 6.5 inches (Homeforia).

Do I need to find a stud?

The listings include hardware for drywall and studs, but a stud is the stronger fixing. Follow the maker’s instructions.
