Floating shelves add storage without using any floor, which is why they suit a small home office. Of the three options we compared, the RICHFOCUS is a pair of 36-inch shelves for the wall above a desk, the Fun Memories is a set of three 16-inch shelves with concealed brackets, and the Furinno Rossi is a 48.8-inch corner unit with five tiers and stated load limits. Only the Furinno lists a weight figure, so check the wall type and the weight of what you plan to put up before you buy.

The Fun Memories listing gives two different depths, 10 inches in the text and 8 inches in the measurements table, and its table also shows a package-style size. We use the 10 inches from the text and mark it as unconfirmed; check the product page before you plan around it. The RICHFOCUS text says 1.5 inches thick and its table says 1.6, which is a small difference.

Wall type and load: what the listings do not say

A floating shelf hangs from the wall, so the wall and the fixings carry the load, not the shelf. Two of the three listings give no weight figure in the text we read, and none of them says what wall type its hardware suits, except the Furinno, which names wood studs or wall anchors. Before you buy:

Find out what is behind the wall. Studs, hollow drywall, plaster and masonry need different fixings. Use the hardware the maker recommends.
Weigh what will go on it. Books, a printer and a monitor are heavy. The Furinno rates 10 lb per tier, so a stack of hardbacks would exceed it.
Keep heavy items low and near the wall. Load placed far from the bracket puts more strain on the fixing.
If a listing gives no load figure, treat the shelf as decor only and contact the seller before loading it.

How to choose floating shelves for a home office

Know the wall first. Studs, drywall or masonry decide the fixings. Follow the maker’s instructions and do not exceed the stated load.
Add up the weight. Only the Furinno gives figures. For the others, keep to light decor or ask the seller.
Depth. 8 to 10 inches is deep enough for books and small boxes without reaching far into the room.
Length and spacing. One 36-inch shelf looks tidy over a desk; three 16-inch shelves give more separate levels.
Corner or flat wall. A corner unit uses a space that is often empty, and needs a true right-angle corner.
