For a home office, choose the cabinet by what you will store and how much floor you can give it. Of the three we compared, the FOSTOKO 36-inch steel cabinet is the one to look at if you want a lock, the SONGMICS steel cabinet is 29.9 inches high with an anti-tip kit and a tabletop the listing rates to 110 lb, and the Furinno LUDER is only 12 inches wide, for a tight corner and light loads. Check the wall width and the depth in front of the cabinet before you order.
We have not tested these cabinets. Sizes and features come from the Amazon listings, checked on September 30, 2026. Where a listing does not say, we say so.
Three home office storage cabinets compared
| FOSTOKO 36-in Locking Cabinet | SONGMICS 31.5-in Steel Cabinet | Furinno LUDER 5-Tier with Door | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Size D x W x H (as listed) | 16 x 32 x 36 in | 15.7 x 31.5 x 29.9 in | 9.3 x 12 x 52.1 in |
| Weight (as listed) | 39.7 lb | 42.1 lb | 22 lb |
| Material | Cold-rolled steel, powder coated | Steel body | Composite wood |
| Doors and shelves | 2 doors, 2 adjustable shelves (3 levels) | Doors, one adjustable inner shelf | 4 open tiers, 1 door at the bottom |
| Lock | Lock and 2 keys | Magnetic closure, no lock listed | None listed |
| Tip-over protection | Can be anchored to the wall | Anti-tip kit included | Not stated in the text we read |
| Load figures in the listing | Not stated in the text we read | Tabletop holds up to 110 lb | Per shelf 5 to 20 lb, total 75 lb (see note) |
| Best for | Documents and supplies you want to lock away | A low steel cabinet with a usable top | A narrow corner and light items |
A note on the Furinno numbers: the listing gives shelf limits of 5, 10, 10 and 15 lb for the four open tiers and 20 lb for the bottom cabinet, which add up to 60 lb, and then states a total capacity of 75 lb. We would plan around the individual shelf limits, not the total.
What to store where
A storage cabinet is not the same as a filing cabinet. A filing cabinet is built for hanging folders; a storage cabinet has shelves behind doors for boxes, supplies and equipment. If most of what you store is paper in folders, our filing cabinet guide and lateral filing cabinet guide are a better fit. A storage cabinet suits the rest of a home office:
- Printer paper, toner and stationery. Shelves you can adjust hold boxes of different heights.
- Equipment and cables. A closed door hides routers, chargers and spare cables. Our cable management guide covers the cables themselves.
- Documents you want locked away. Only the FOSTOKO lists a lock. A lock on a light cabinet keeps out casual access; it is not a safe and the listing does not claim fire protection.
- Books and light items. The slim Furinno suits these, and its shelf limits are low, so keep heavy binders on a sturdier unit.
- The top surface. The SONGMICS listing rates its tabletop to 110 lb, which can hold a printer. The others give no top load figure, so treat their tops as light shelves.
Will it fit your wall and floor?
Measure the width of the wall space and the depth from the wall to the next obstacle, such as your chair back or a walkway. The tool compares your numbers with the listed size of each cabinet. It does not include the door swing, which none of the listings state, so leave extra room in front.
Wall and floor space check
Enter the width of the wall space and the depth from the wall to the next obstacle, in inches. Either field can be left empty.
Compares the listed width and depth only. Door swing, baseboards and the chair position also matter. Check the product page.
The three cabinets
FOSTOKO 36 in Metal Cabinet with Lock, 2 Doors and 2 Adjustable Shelves
The listing describes a cold-rolled steel cabinet with a powder-coat finish, two reinforced doors, two adjustable shelves (three storage levels) and a lock with two keys. It says the cabinet can be anchored to the wall to prevent tipping when loaded, and that assembly comes with paper instructions and a video. The measurements table gives 16 inches deep, 32 wide and 36 high, and 39.7 lb.
- Good for: someone who wants to lock away documents, valuables or supplies in a cabinet that stands on the floor.
- Keep in mind: no shelf load figure is stated in the text we read, it is 16 inches deep, and a lock on a light cabinet is a deterrent, not a safe.
SONGMICS Storage Cabinet, Sideboard with Adjustable Shelves, 31.5 in
The listing describes a steel cabinet with an adjustable inner shelf, ventilation holes in the doors, a magnetic closure, an included anti-tip kit, and a tabletop that it says holds up to 110 lb. It says the cabinet can hold items up to 31.5 inches long and lifts 3.9 inches off the floor. The measurements table gives 15.7 inches deep, 31.5 wide and 29.9 high, and 42.1 lb.
- Good for: a low cabinet where the top doubles as a shelf for a printer or supplies.
- Keep in mind: it has a magnetic closure and no lock, and the listing markets it as a sideboard and TV cabinet as well as an office cabinet.
Furinno LUDER 5-Tier Bookcase with 1 Door Storage Cabinet
The listing describes four open tiers above a bottom cabinet with one door, a back panel for stability and a composite-wood build. It gives shelf limits from 5 to 20 lb and a stated total of 75 lb. The measurements table gives 9.3 inches deep, 12 wide and 52.1 high, and 22 lb.
- Good for: a tight corner or narrow wall where you need a bit of hidden storage and some open shelves.
- Keep in mind: the shelf limits are low, the listed total does not match the sum of the individual limits, and the text we read does not mention wall anchoring.
How to choose a storage cabinet for a home office
- List what goes inside first. Boxes, paper and equipment need shelves; folders need a filing cabinet.
- Use the space check above. Width and depth are the two numbers that decide it in a small room.
- Door swing. None of the listings state it. Leave room in front, or choose a cabinet that suits your path.
- Lock or no lock. Only the FOSTOKO lists one. If you need to secure sensitive items, do not rely on a light cabinet lock alone.
- Load limits. Read them on the product page. The Furinno gives per-shelf figures, the SONGMICS a top figure, the FOSTOKO none.
- Anchor tall units. The SONGMICS includes an anti-tip kit and the FOSTOKO can be anchored. Follow the maker's instructions.
- Steel or wood. Steel resists damp and knocks. Composite wood is lighter (the Furinno is listed at 22 lb against about 40 lb for the steel ones). Keep both away from leaks.
- Tight on space. A desk with a hutch or drawers can move storage off the floor. See our desk with a hutch guide and small desks with drawers guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good storage cabinet for a home office?
It depends on what you store. The FOSTOKO suits items you want to lock away, the SONGMICS is a low steel cabinet with a strong top, and the Furinno is for a narrow corner and light loads.
What is the difference between a storage cabinet and a filing cabinet?
A filing cabinet has drawers for hanging folders. A storage cabinet has shelves behind doors for boxes, supplies and equipment.
Do storage cabinets need to be anchored to the wall?
It is sensible for any tall or top-heavy unit. Two of the three listings mention anti-tip or anchoring; follow the maker's instructions for all of them.
Can I put a printer on top?
The SONGMICS listing rates its tabletop to 110 lb. The other listings give no top figure, so check before you load them.
Which cabinet is best for a small room?
The Furinno is only 12 inches wide and 9.3 inches deep, but it holds little. The SONGMICS is 15.7 inches deep, 31.5 wide and 29.9 high, so it takes more floor but holds more.
Is a lockable cabinet safe for important documents?
A lock keeps out casual access. It is not a safe and the listing does not claim fire protection, so keep irreplaceable documents in a proper fireproof box or safe.
