A lateral filing cabinet is wide and shallow: the drawers open along the long side, so the cabinet takes about 15 inches of floor depth instead of the 22 inches of the vertical Staples cabinet in our home office filing cabinet guide. In exchange it needs 27 to 31 inches of wall. Of the three 2-drawer models we compared, the FOSTOKO and the Yukimo are steel and 28.5 inches high, and the GFGWXW is a wood cabinet 31 inches wide and 27 inches high with a printer-stand top.
We have not tested these cabinets. Sizes and features come from the Amazon listings, checked on September 30, 2026. Where a listing does not say, we say so.
Three lateral filing cabinets compared
| FOSTOKO 2-Drawer Lateral | Yukimo 2-Drawer Lateral | GFGWXW 2-Drawer Lateral | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Size D x W x H (as listed) | 15.7 x 26.8 x 28.5 in | 15.75 x 26.77 x 28.5 in | 15.4 x 31 x 27 in |
| Material | Cold-rolled steel, powder coated | Steel, powder coated | Engineered wood |
| Lock | One lock secures both drawers, two keys | Listing title says with lock | Lock on the two drawers |
| Anti-tilt | Only one drawer opens at a time | Only one drawer opens at a time | Not stated in the text we read |
| File sizes listed | Letter, legal, A4, F4, file boxes | Letter, legal, A4 | Letter, A4, F4, legal |
| Drawer slides | Not stated in the text we read | Steel ball-bearing, full extension | Not stated in the text we read |
| Weight figure in the listing | Supports up to 220 lb (as the listing words it) | Not stated in the text we read | Not stated in the text we read |
| Assembly | Required, instructions and video | Required (title says so) | Not stated in the text we read |
| Best for | A steel cabinet with a stated load figure | A steel cabinet with full-extension drawers | A wide wood cabinet that doubles as a printer stand |
Two of the listings give a figure that needs care. The FOSTOKO listing says its reinforced construction supports up to 220 lb, without saying whether that is the whole cabinet, the top or one drawer. The other two give no weight figure in the text we read. Do not load the drawers or the top to the limit.
Lateral or vertical: which one suits a small room?
The choice is depth against wall. Using the sizes above and the vertical Staples cabinet from our earlier guide (22 in deep and 15 in wide, as listed), the difference is easy to see:
| Shape | Floor depth | Wall length | Example (as listed) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vertical 2-drawer | 22 in | 15 in | Staples 2-Drawer Vertical |
| Lateral 2-drawer | 15.4 to 15.75 in | 26.77 to 31 in | FOSTOKO, Yukimo, GFGWXW |
So a lateral cabinet suits a room with a clear stretch of wall and a narrow walkway, for example along the side of a hallway-style room. A vertical cabinet suits a corner or a short wall. The listings do not give the interior capacity in a comparable unit, so we cannot say which holds more files. Also leave room in front for the drawers to open; none of the three listings states how far a drawer travels out.
A lateral cabinet is also a work surface: all three listings describe a top that can hold a printer, and the Yukimo lists scanners and monitors too. That helps in a small room where a printer would otherwise need its own stand, as long as you keep the load inside what the maker states.
Will it fit your wall and your desk?
Measure the length of the wall you want to use, and, if you plan to slide it beside or under a desk, the height from the floor to the underside of the desk. OSHA suggests keeping at least 20 inches of width and 17 inches of depth at knee level for your legs (OSHA layout guidance), so a cabinet next to your knees should not eat into that space. Our chair fit checker shows how to check a chair and desk together, and our small bedroom desk guide helps with the rest of the room.
Wall and desk fit check
Enter the wall length and, if you want to slide the cabinet under a desk, the height from the floor to the underside of the desk, in inches. Either field can be left empty.
Compares the listed width and height only. Drawer travel, baseboards and the chair position also matter. Check the product page.
The three cabinets
FOSTOKO 2-Drawer Lateral File Cabinet with Lock (26.8 in wide)
The listing describes cold-rolled steel with a powder-coated finish, one lock with an interlock that secures both drawers (two keys included) and an anti-tilt mechanism so that only one drawer opens at a time. Each drawer has removable hanging bars for letter, legal, A4, F4 and file boxes. It says reinforced construction supports up to 220 lb and that assembly is required, with instructions and an installation video.
- Good for: a home office that wants a steel lateral cabinet with a lock and a stated load figure.
- Keep in mind: the 220 lb figure is not explained (whole cabinet, top or drawer), and at 28.5 in high it will not go under many desks.
Yukimo 2-Drawer Lateral File Cabinet with Lock (26.7 in wide)
The listing describes a steel cabinet with a scratch- and rust-resistant powder coat, steel ball-bearing slides with full extension, adjustable hanging bars for letter, legal and A4 folders, and an anti-tilt mechanism so that only one drawer opens at a time. Its top is described as suitable for printers, scanners or monitors. It comes in black or white and needs assembly.
- Good for: someone who wants full-extension drawers to reach the back of the cabinet.
- Keep in mind: the text we read gives no weight figure for the cabinet or the top, so keep the top load modest.
GFGWXW 2-Drawer Lateral File Cabinet with Lock (wood, printer stand)
The listing describes a modern-farmhouse style cabinet in black engineered wood, with a lock on the two drawers, room for letter, A4, F4 and legal hanging files, and a top that doubles as a printer stand. It gives 15.4 inches deep, 31 inches wide and 27 inches high.
- Good for: a room where the cabinet has to look like furniture and sit below a window or beside a desk at 27 in high.
- Keep in mind: it is engineered wood, and the text we read does not mention anti-tilt, drawer slides, weight capacity or assembly.
How to choose a lateral filing cabinet
- Wall first. Use the tool above. These cabinets are 27 to 31 inches wide, so check the wall length, doors and baseboards.
- Depth. About 15 inches of floor depth is the point of a lateral cabinet. Add space in front for the drawers to open; the listings do not state the travel.
- Steel or wood. Steel resists damp and knocks better. A wood cabinet looks more like furniture. Both need to be kept dry and level.
- Tipping. Two listings describe an anti-tilt mechanism so that only one drawer opens at a time. Open one drawer at a time anyway and follow the maker's instructions.
- File size. If you keep legal-size files, check the listing names legal. The Yukimo, FOSTOKO and GFGWXW all do.
- Top load. Keep a printer within any weight the listing states. Where none is stated, choose a light printer or use a separate stand.
- Lock. A lock on a light cabinet keeps out casual access. It is not a safe or a fireproof box.
- If you have little wall. A 2-drawer vertical cabinet or a set of desk drawers may fit better. See our small desks with drawers guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is a lateral filing cabinet?
A file cabinet whose drawers open along its wide side, so it is wider than it is deep. The three here are 26.8 to 31 inches wide and about 15 inches deep.
Is a lateral or a vertical file cabinet better for a small room?
A lateral cabinet takes less floor depth (about 15 inches against 22 for the vertical Staples) but more wall (27 to 31 inches against 15). Pick by which of the two you have more of.
Can a lateral filing cabinet go under a desk?
Only if the underside of the desk is higher than the cabinet. The steel models are 28.5 inches high and the wood one is 27 inches high. Use the tool above.
Can I put a printer on top?
All three listings describe a top that can hold a printer. Only the FOSTOKO gives a load figure, and it does not say whether that covers the top. Use a light printer.
Do these hold legal-size files?
Yes, all three list legal-size hanging files, along with letter and A4.
Does the Yukimo or the FOSTOKO stop the cabinet tipping?
Both listings describe an anti-tilt mechanism that lets only one drawer open at a time. That reduces the risk but does not replace following the maker's instructions.
