For a small home office, choose a 2-drawer letter-size cabinet and check two things before anything else: its height against your desk and its depth against your walkway. Of the three we compared, the Staples steel cabinet lists a keyed lock and ball-bearing drawers but is 22 inches deep, the VASAGLE lists separate locks and an anti-tip kit, and the HOOBRO is the smallest and the only one on casters, at 26.8 inches high.
We have not tested these cabinets. Sizes, weights and features come from the Amazon listings, checked on September 29, 2026. Where a listing does not say, we say so.

| Best for | A sturdy locking steel cabinet | A furniture look with separate locks | Under a desk or beside it, easy to move |
None of the three lists a maximum weight per drawer in the text we read, so do not load them to the brim. The VASAGLE and the HOOBRO both describe A4 and letter-size hanging folders, and the Staples describes letter-size. Legal-size files are not covered by any of the three listings.
Will it fit under your desk and leave your legs room?
A filing cabinet under a desk has to be lower than the underside of the desk, and it should not steal your leg room. OSHA suggests leg clearance of at least 20 inches wide and 17 inches deep at knee level, and generally 20 to 28 inches of height under the desktop (OSHA layout guidance). Measure the height from the floor to the underside of your desk (including any drawer or apron) and the width of the opening between the desk legs or side panels.
Under-desk fit check
Height from the floor to the underside of the desk, and (optional) the width of the leg opening, in inches.
Compares the listed height and width only. Depth, drawer swing and the chair position also matter. Check the product page.
The three cabinets
Staples 2-Drawer Vertical File Cabinet, Letter Size, Lockable
The listing describes a fully assembled steel cabinet in black or white with a built-in keyed lock, ball-bearing drawer glides, built-in label frames and space for letter-size hanging files. It gives 22 inches deep, 15 inches wide and 28.38 inches high, and a weight of 39.5 lb.
- Good for: someone who wants a sturdy locking cabinet and has a wall or corner to stand it in.
- Keep in mind: it is 22 inches deep, so it takes more floor than the other two, and at 28.38 inches it will not go under most desks.
VASAGLE 2-Drawer File Cabinet with Locks, A4 and Letter Size
The listing describes a cabinet with two drawers that lock separately, hanging rails you can move to hold A4 or letter-size files, an included anti-tip kit for fixing it to the wall and particleboard panels in a modern style. It gives 15.7 inches deep, 16.1 wide and 27.9 high, and a weight of 36.2 lb.
- Good for: a home office where the cabinet has to look like furniture and needs separate locks.
- Keep in mind: it is particleboard, so it will not resist damp or impact like steel, and the listing gives no per-drawer weight limit.
HOOBRO 2-Drawer Mobile File Cabinet, Rolling Printer Stand
The listing describes a rolling cabinet with four casters (two lockable), a particleboard top that can hold a printer, a retro black and rustic brown look and drawers that are about 14 by 15 by 11 inches inside for A4 or letter hanging files. It gives 15.7 inches square and 26.8 inches high and a weight of 16.06 lb.
- Good for: a small room where the cabinet has to roll under a desk or out of the way.
- Keep in mind: the bullet points we read do not mention a lock, and casters mean it can move if unlocked with a printer on top.
How to choose a filing cabinet for a home office
- Height first. Use the tool above. A cabinet that is too tall for the underside of your desk stands beside it and takes floor.
- Leg room. Keep at least 20 inches of opening for your legs. Our chair fit checker explains how to check chair and desk together.
- Depth and the path. A 22-inch deep cabinet can block a walkway in a small room. Mark its outline with tape before you order.
- File size. Check that the rail or drawer suits letter or A4 hanging folders. The three listings do not cover legal size.
- Security. If you keep sensitive documents, look for a lock, and know that locks on light cabinets are a deterrent, not a safe.
- Tipping. Fill lower drawers first and use an anti-tip kit if one is included. Follow the maker’s instructions.
- Casters. A rolling cabinet moves easily but only stays put if the casters lock, and a heavy top load can tip it.
- Storage alternatives. For desk drawers and under-desk storage, see our small desks with drawers guide.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best small filing cabinet for a home office?
It depends on your desk and room. Among the three we compared, the Staples is the sturdiest with a keyed lock, the VASAGLE has separate locks and an anti-tip kit, and the HOOBRO is the smallest and rolls.
How big is a 2-drawer filing cabinet?
The three here are about 15 to 16 inches wide, 15.7 to 22 inches deep and 26.8 to 28.4 inches high.
Can a filing cabinet go under a desk?
If its height is lower than the underside of the desk and it leaves you at least 20 inches of leg opening. Use the tool above.
Do I need a lockable filing cabinet?
If you keep sensitive documents, a lock helps against casual access. It does not replace a safe.
Will letter-size files fit?
All three list letter-size hanging files. The VASAGLE and the HOOBRO also list A4.
Are particleboard cabinets as good as steel?
Steel is more resistant to damp and impact. Particleboard suits a lighter, furniture-style look.
