Quick answer

The five checks are: do the title, bullets and table agree; does the material row name a material; is the weight rating stated and believable; is there a warranty; and is the slat spacing or support described. Of the three frames below, the Zinus Rumi queen passes the most: its title, bullets and table agree on 14 inches and 13 inches of storage, it states 2,200 pounds and a 5 year warranty. The Modway Corinne names its slats and a rating of 1,300 pounds. The Modway Zane gives size, weight and material but no rating. None of the three states a slat gap. That last gap is typical, and it is the one that matters most for a foam mattress.

Check 1: do the numbers agree

The commonest fault we found was a listing contradicting itself.

  • Modway Bridgette: 48 inches overall in the table, 53 to 63 inches in the bullets.
  • Upcanso cal king: a rating of 1,500 pounds in the table and 3,500 in the title.
  • Amazon Basics king: 600 pounds in the table and 700 in a bullet.
  • DORITRON queen: an item size of 38.7 by 6.1 by 7.6 inches that cannot be a bed.
  • Wood and steel queen: a rating of 72.6 pounds for a 71.1 pound bed.

One disagreement is a copy error; several are a pattern.

Check 2: does it name the material

“Wood” can mean solid boards, board with veneer or fiber board. A listing that says “rubberwood” or “poplar slats”, as the Zane and the Corinne do, tells you more than one that says “wood”. We also saw a “solid wood” title over an “engineered wood” table on the cal king floor bed.

Check 3: is the rating stated, and is it believable

A rating is the seller’s claim. Divide it by the frame’s weight: the hiyuehome frame states 3,500 pounds at 41.9 pounds, which is 83.5 times its own weight, and the Zinus queen states 2,200 at 27.6 pounds, which is 80 times (2,200 divided by 27.6). Neither tells you how it was tested. A rating that is lower than a person’s weight is plainly wrong. Use ratings only to check the number is well above the mattress and the sleepers.

Check 4: is there a warranty

Zinus states a 5 year limited warranty on the frame. Boyd Sleep states 5 years on a base, and Ashley 10 years on a mattress. Many listings state none in the text we read. A warranty that is stated is a commitment; read what it covers.

Check 5: is the mattress support described

Mattress makers set their own rules. Nest Bedding’s warranty asks for slats no more than four inches apart and a rigid center support to the floor for a queen or larger; Sleep Number says no more than two inches. A frame whose listing gives the slat count, spacing and center legs lets you check. Most do not, and you should ask. See bed slats and bed foundation.

This is our own tally, which is a way to compare listings and not a measure of quality.

What the listings say

Zinus 14 Inch Rumi Metal Bed Frame, Queen, black (ASIN B0CSYBPMW4). The table gives 79.5 by 59.5 by 14 inches, a weight of 27.6 pounds, alloy steel and 2,200 pounds. The bullets give 13 inches of storage, steel slats, assembly in about 20 minutes and a 5 year warranty. Best for: a frame whose listing is internally consistent. Watch out: the slat gap and center support are not stated.

Modway Corinne Steel Modern Mattress Foundation Queen Bed Frame with Wood Slat Support (ASIN B01N23PNE6). The table gives 80 by 60 by 12.5 inches, 54 pounds, metal and 1,300 pounds. The bullets give coated steel and poplar wood slats for memory foam, innerspring, latex and hybrid mattresses. Best for: a frame that names its slats. Watch out: no warranty or gap in the text we read.

Modway Zane King Size Spindle Bed in Walnut (ASIN B0GJWZ7XWP). The table gives 80 by 85 by 45 inches, 95 pounds and wood; the bullets say solid rubberwood and a wood-slat base. Best for: a king wood bed with a stated size and weight. Watch out: no rating, warranty or gap in the text we read.

How to use the checks

Run all five before you pay. Write the answers beside the listing.

Ask the seller for the missing ones. A reply in writing is evidence.

Prefer a listing that agrees with itself. It tells you the seller read it.

Do not treat a pass as a guarantee. We have not tested any frame.

A message you can send to any seller

If a listing leaves out something you need, a short message is worth sending. You can copy this one: “Before I order, please confirm in writing: the assembled length, width and height; the weight rating in pounds and whether it includes the mattress; the material of the frame and the slats; the spacing between the slats and the number of center support legs; and the warranty period and what it covers.” A reply that answers every point is a good sign. A reply that does not, or no reply, is information too.

Why we do not name a best frame

We did not pick a winner, because we have not tested any frame and a listing is not a test. What this guide offers is a way to read listings. If you want a frame with a clear paper trail, the Zinus Rumi queen is the one whose page was most consistent among the three. If you want wood, the Modway Zane gives the size and weight, and a question to the seller would fill in the rating. If you want a combined frame and foundation with named slats, the Corinne does that.

Whichever you choose, keep the listing page, as a screenshot or a saved copy, alongside your order. If the frame arrives different from the page, that record is what you will point to.

Mistakes to avoid

Judging by a rating. It is the seller’s number.

Judging by photos. They show the finish, not the structure.

Skipping the mattress rule. The slat gap matters for foam mattresses.

Assuming a known name means no errors. Even large sellers’ listings had mismatches.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell a good bed frame from a listing?

Check that the numbers agree, the material is named, the rating is stated and believable, a warranty is stated and the mattress support is described.

Are high ratings a sign of quality?

Not by themselves. Divide the rating by the frame’s weight and ask how it was measured.

Does a warranty matter?

It is a commitment. Zinus states 5 years on its frame in the listing we read.

Is solid wood better than engineered wood?

We have no tested comparison; the listing should say which it is, and it should be consistent.

What do mattress makers require?

Nest Bedding asks for slats no more than four inches apart; Sleep Number two. Check yours.

Have you tested these frames?

No. The numbers are from the listings.
