Quick answer

A twin Murphy bed gives one sleeper a bed that tucks away in the day. Three kinds show up under that search on Amazon: a chest-style unit that needs no wall mounting, a vertical wall kit you build into a cabinet and anchor to studs, and a tri-fold mattress that is not a Murphy bed but solves the same problem on the floor. We read one of each on 2026-10-01: the HomeStock twin Murphy bed chest with a 6 inch mattress, the Tlongxia twin hardware kit and the ROXGOX tri-fold twin mattress. We have not tested any of them. Every figure comes from the listings, and where a listing contradicts itself we say so.

The chest is the lowest effort, the kit is the strongest and most custom, and the mattress is the simplest.

Notes from the pages. The HomeStock listing says it needs no complex wall mounting or professional installation and is ready to set up immediately; it lists a deep storage drawer of 20 by 17.13 by 8 inches, a power station with a nine-foot cord and dual USB ports, and a 6 inch mattress built from a 1 inch foam topper, 2 inches of cooling gel foam and 3 inches of support foam. The Tlongxia twin kit lists mattress thicknesses of 6, 8, 10 and 12 inches, a gas spring system, a manual and template paper, and a weight of 11 pounds. The ROXGOX listing says the mattress is vacuum compressed and may take 3 to 7 days to fully expand, weighs 19 pounds and has a washable cover with handles.

Contradictions. The Tlongxia listing bullet says the kit suits narrow twin through California king, while the title and table say narrow twin, twin and twin XL; ask the seller which sizes you get. The HomeStock listing’s “chest” closed size of 24.38 inches long by 42.63 inches wide is a different shape from what the word “Murphy bed” suggests: it opens by extending to 75.5 inches, which is a pull-out chest, not a wall bed. We use the figures as listed.

A worked example: a 9 by 10 foot guest room

The room is 108 by 120 inches. You want the bed to disappear by day, with at least 30 inches of floor to walk, our planning estimate.

  • HomeStock closed: 24.38 × 42.63 = 1,039 square inches, 7.2 square feet. Open: 75.5 × 42.63 = 3,218 square inches, 22.4 square feet. Opening multiplies the floor use by 22.4 ÷ 7.2 = 3.1. Pushed against the 120 inch wall with its 75.5 inch length along the 108 inch wall, 108 − 75.5 = 32.5 inches remains, just over 30.
  • Tlongxia kit: a twin cabinet is about 38 or 39 inches wide inside plus side boards of 0.75 inch each, our assumption: 39 + 1.5 = 40.5 inches. A twin mattress is typically about 75 inches long, so when the bed comes down it reaches about 75 inches from the wall. In a 120 inch deep room, 120 − 75 = 45 inches remains, and the bed folds up flat to the wall by day. The cabinet needs 81 inches of hardware height, leaving 96 − 81 = 15 inches in an 8 foot room.
  • ROXGOX flat: 75 × 38 = 2,850 square inches, 19.8 square feet. Folded in thirds, 25 by 38 inches by our assumption, 6.6 square feet, which tucks into a closet.

Load check, with an assumed 200 pound sleeper and 40 pounds of bedding, 240 pounds. HomeStock 600 pounds gives 40 percent of the limit. Tlongxia 1,000 pounds gives 24 percent. ROXGOX 250 pounds gives 96 percent, which leaves almost no margin. Use your own numbers, and remember the limits are the sellers’ claims.

Studs: our planning assumption is walls with studs 16 inches on center. A 40.5 inch cabinet spans 40.5 ÷ 16 = 2.5 stud spaces, so plan for 3 studs.

Wall mounting: the safety point

The chest does not mount to a wall. A wall bed kit does, and the anchoring is critical. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2018 recall of one maker’s Murphy bed hardware kits was because the hardware used to secure the wooden wall enclosures to the wall studs did not provide sufficient bracing support, which posed tip-over and entrapment hazards that can result in death or injuries to children. That recall concerns a different brand and does not apply to the kit here. It does show why a wall kit must be anchored into studs and that a child’s room needs special care.

Mattress and flammability

The CPSC says mattresses are subject to the flammability standards in 16 C.F.R. parts 1632 and 1633, and that a detachable mattress portion of a futon or sofa bed is likely subject to those standards. None of the three listings states a flammability label in the text we read. If a child will sleep on it, ask the seller.

Comfort and how often it will be used

The mattress decides whether a guest sleeps well. The HomeStock listing builds its 6 inch mattress from 1 inch of foam topper, 2 inches of cooling gel foam and 3 inches of support foam, which is a thin stack. That suits guests, naps and a child’s occasional bed, but a person sleeping there every night may want more. The Tlongxia kit lists mattress thicknesses up to 12 inches, so a wall bed gives the most freedom, because you choose the mattress. The ROXGOX is 6 inches of cool gel memory foam over high-density foam, and its listing calls it suited to guests, yoga and camping. None of the listings gives a firmness rating or a test result, so treat comfort claims as marketing.

Plan for daily handling as well. A chest that must be pulled open and pushed closed each day is easier if the floor is hard and smooth; a thick rug can jam it. A wall bed needs the bedding to stay on, or a place to put it. The HomeStock drawer, 20 by 17.13 by 8 inches, is a place for sheets and pillows, which is useful, but it is not large.

Kids and shared rooms

If a child will use any of these, think about entrapment and tip-over before style. The CPSC recall mentioned above cites children as the people at risk when a wall enclosure is not properly braced. Do not let children play on a folding bed or in the gap between the bed and the wall. Keep the mattress thin enough for the frame to close and latch, and check that the latch holds. For a bed that stays on the floor, a chest or a tri-fold mattress has no falling parts, which makes it the lower-risk choice, though its load and thickness are lower.

Setup and storage

The HomeStock listing says there is no complex wall mounting and no professional installation, so setup is quick; plan to lift a chest that is likely heavy, and ask the seller for its weight, which the text we read does not give. The Tlongxia kit lists installation in 8 steps and about 20 minutes once parts are ready, which does not include building the cabinet. A tri-fold mattress arrives compressed and needs 3 to 7 days to expand, according to its listing. Unpack it early.

Which one for which room

  • Chest (HomeStock): easiest. It looks like a bench or chest by day, holds bedding in its drawer and charges a phone. It needs 75.5 inches of floor when open and offers a 6 inch mattress, which is thin for nightly sleeping.
  • Wall kit (Tlongxia): frees the floor most and takes a thicker mattress, but needs carpentry and a stud wall. See our Murphy bed hardware guide.
  • Tri-fold (ROXGOX): no furniture at all, but its 250 pound limit and thin foam suit occasional use. See our futon guide.

How to choose

  1. Decide how often someone sleeps there.
  2. Measure the room’s open length and the walking space left.
  3. Choose a wall kit only if you can anchor to studs and build a cabinet.
  4. Check the stated load against the sleeper.
  5. Ask about flammability labels for a child’s bed.

Frequently asked questions

What is a twin Murphy bed?

A one-person bed that folds or slides away, so the room works as something else by day.

How much room does it need open?

About 75 inches long for a twin mattress, by our assumption. The HomeStock chest lists 75.5 inches open.

Does a twin Murphy bed need to be mounted on a wall?

The HomeStock chest does not. A wall kit does, and the CPSC recall of one brand over its stud bracing shows why it matters.

How much weight can it hold?

The listings state 600 pounds (chest), 1,000 pounds (kit) and 250 pounds (tri-fold mattress).

Can I use a thicker mattress?

The Tlongxia kit lists 6 to 12 inches. The chest comes with a 6 inch mattress.
