Pick mesh for warm rooms and airflow, fabric for a soft, quiet feel, and PU or leather-look covers for easy wiping. The cover is only part of comfort: the foam under it, the seat shape and the adjustments matter more. This guide compares the three covers on the things that differ in daily use, so you can choose for your room rather than for a photo.
Quick comparison
| Mesh | Fabric | PU or leather-look | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airflow | Best | Moderate | Lowest, can feel warm |
| Feel | Firm, springy | Soft | Smooth, padded |
| Cleaning | Vacuum, spot clean | Dust and stains build up | Wipes clean |
| Pets | Claws can snag mesh | Claws can snag fabric | Scratches can show |
| Weak spot | Mesh can feel hard on long sessions for some people, and cheap mesh can sag | Stains and dust | Coating can crack or peel on lower-quality products |
| Look in a small room | Light, see-through back | Neutral | Bulkier, more formal |
Mesh
Mesh lets air through the back, which helps in a warm room or if you run hot. Because you can see through it, a mesh-back chair also looks lighter in a tiny room. Quality varies: the tension of the mesh and the frame behind it decide whether it supports you or sags. If the seat is also mesh, check the frame and the foam, or pick a padded seat with a mesh back.
Fabric
Fabric feels soft and does not stick to skin, and it is usually quiet. It holds dust and absorbs spills, so it suits a room where nobody eats at the desk. Darker, tightly woven fabrics hide dirt better. Fabric can also trap pet hair.
PU and leather-look covers
Many chairs sold as leather use polyurethane (PU) coating or bonded leather rather than full-grain leather, so read the listing carefully: a product described as PU leather is a coated material. Coated covers wipe clean and resist stains, and they look formal. They do not breathe as well, and reviewers of lower-priced products often mention peeling or cracking over time. We have not tested chairs, so treat that as a common complaint and not a measured result.
What matters more than the cover
- Foam and seat shape. A thin cushion under any cover will feel hard. Listings sometimes state foam density or thickness. If they do not, say so and read buyer feedback about the seat.
- Adjustments. Seat height, seat depth and lumbar support decide whether the chair fits you. OSHA lists these as part of a good chair (OSHA chair guidance).
- Frame and base. OSHA recommends a strong five-legged base with casters suited to your floor. Hard floors and carpet need different wheels.
- Weight limit. Check the stated capacity. If the listing does not state one, treat that as missing information.
Cleaning basics
Follow the maker’s care instructions first. As general practice: vacuum mesh and fabric regularly, spot-clean stains early, and wipe coated covers with a damp cloth, avoiding harsh solvents that can damage the coating.
Choose by situation
- Warm room or you run hot: mesh back, and check that the seat cushion is not too hot.
- You eat or drink at the desk, or have young children: PU or leather-look, for wipe-clean covers.
- You have cats or a dog that climbs on the chair: avoid loose weaves that snag. A smooth, firm cover is less likely to catch claws.
- You want a soft, quiet feel and the room is cool: fabric.
- You have allergies to dust: smooth surfaces are easier to wipe, but the foam and frame matter too.
- Your chair will be in the living room: pick the cover that matches the room, then check size using our small-space chair guide.
Whatever the cover, check the seat height range, seat depth and weight limit, and read our notes on seat fit if you are short. Cover alone will not make a poorly fitting chair comfortable.
Questions to ask before you buy
- What is the cover made of? Listings that say leather may mean PU, and it is worth reading the material line.
- Is the seat foam described (thickness or density)? If not, look for buyer feedback about the seat feeling hard.
- What is the stated weight capacity?
- Does the chair have adjustable seat height, and does the listing state the range? If it does not, we cannot verify it.
- How long is the warranty, and does it cover the cover material?
- Do the casters suit your floor?
Products worth checking
These products match the topic above. We have not tested them. Sizes and features come from the Amazon listings, checked on September 30, 2026; where a listing does not say, we say so.
CAPOT Ergonomic Mesh Office Chair: highest stated weight limit
The listing states a lumbar that adjusts about 2 inches over 8 levels, an enlarged mesh seat, a headrest that adjusts in height and depth, locking recline at 90, 110 or 125 degrees, flip-up soft arms, an SGS gas lift and a stainless steel base rated to 400 lb. Seat height is 18.5 to 22.05 inches.
- Good for: a user in the stated range who wants a defined lumbar range and a high weight rating.
- Keep in mind: the seat depth appears as 19.3 in in one place and 20 in in another, and the listing repeats percent claims we cannot verify.
Ticova Ergonomic Office Chair: headrest and armrest adjustment
The listing says the lumbar adjusts in height and depth, the headrest in height and angle, the armrests in height, angle and forward and back, and the tilt goes up to 130 degrees. It describes a 3.4 inch high-density foam seat with a waterfall edge.
- Good for: someone who wants a headrest and arms that move in several directions.
- Keep in mind: no user range or weight limit appears in the bullet points we read.
BestOffice Ergonomic Gaming Chair for Adults, White PU Leather
The listing describes a high backrest with thick padding, lumbar support and a headrest pillow, a rocking function from 90 to 120 degrees, easy-to-wipe white PU leather, a heavy-duty metal base rated to 250 lb and smooth nylon casters. The table gives 27 by 24 by 51 inches.
- Good for: a simple gaming chair with a modest recline and a wipe-clean cover.
- Keep in mind: check the weight limit in the listing, and the table’s seat depth of 27 inches is the overall depth, so ignore it.
Frequently asked questions
Is mesh or leather better for an office chair?
Mesh is more breathable, and leather-look covers are easier to clean. Neither is better in general. Choose for room temperature and cleaning needs.
Is PU leather real leather?
No. PU leather is a coated synthetic material. Full leather is animal hide, and bonded leather mixes leather scraps with a coating.
Do mesh chairs last?
Quality varies a lot with the mesh and frame. Read recent buyer feedback about sagging or tearing.
What is the most comfortable office chair material?
It depends on the person. The foam density, seat shape and adjustments influence comfort more than the outer cover.
Are fabric office chairs hot?
Less than leather-look covers and more than mesh, in general. The room temperature matters too.
