Quick answer

A twin-over-full bunk bed puts a twin mattress on top of a full one, so it suits an older child up top and a larger sleeper, or a parent, below. It takes about 32 square feet of floor against about 48 for a separate twin and full bed. The three things to check are the guardrail height against the mattress thickness, the stated load for each bed and the ceiling.

We read three on Amazon on 2026-10-01: a wood Grain & Grove model with two under-bed drawers, a Max & Lily Scandinavian model with a trundle and a metal model with a trundle whose listing text is partly garbled. We have not tested any of them. Every figure comes from the listings, and where a listing contradicts itself we say so.

Contradictions to know about. The Grain & Grove table lists “Item Depth 62.25 inches,” which matches the height in the title, so it is a mislabel. The 800 pound figure is two beds at 400 pounds each, so it is consistent with the bullet if it is a total. The Max & Lily listing says solid pine and aspen with a slatted headboard and metal-on-metal bolt connections, and gives a footprint of 80 by 58.5 by 65 inches. The metal listing’s text has letters missing (“eres,” “peeful,” “spe”), so we use only its table: twin over full, metal, 131.1 pounds, 77.17 by 55.91 by 66.54 inches, and no load or rail height.

What the federal rule says about rails

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s guidance for the bunk bed rule says bunk beds must have at least two upper bunk guardrails, one on each side, and that the tops of the guardrails must be no less than 5 inches above the top of the mattress. Lower bunks whose mattress foundation is 30 inches or less from the floor do not need guardrails. The rule is aimed at preventing children from being trapped between the upper bunk and a wall or in openings below the guardrails or at the ends.

That 5 inch margin gives a limit on mattress thickness: rail height minus 5 inches. The Grain & Grove listing gives 14 inch guardrails, so 14 − 5 = 9 inches is the thickest mattress that keeps the margin. It says the bed takes twin and full mattresses between 5 and 8 inches thick, which stays under 9. For the other two, rail height is not stated, so ask the seller before you buy a thick mattress.

A worked example: floor space and ceiling

Footprint is length times width.

  • Grain & Grove: 80.75 × 57 = 4,603 square inches, 32 square feet.
  • Max & Lily: 80 × 58.5 = 4,680 square inches, 32.5 square feet.
  • Metal: 77.17 × 55.91 = 4,314 square inches, 30 square feet.

A separate twin and full bed, using typical mattress sizes of 38 by 75 and 54 by 75 inches, our assumption, take 2,850 + 4,050 = 6,900 square inches, 47.9 square feet, before any gap between them. The Grain & Grove bunk saves (47.9 − 32) ÷ 47.9 = 33 percent. The trundle on the other two takes extra floor when pulled out, which the listings do not size.

Ceiling: in an 8 foot room, 96 inches, the frame tops leave 96 − 62.25 = 33.75, 96 − 65 = 31 and 96 − 66.54 = 29.46 inches above the frame. If the guardrail stands 5 inches above the top bunk’s mattress, the space above the mattress is about 5 inches more than that. Our planning estimate is 30 inches above the mattress so a sleeper can sit up, so all three pass, but the metal bed with a 66.54 inch frame is the tightest, and a ceiling fan would change that.

Storage: each Grain & Grove drawer is 37 × 16.5 × 10.5 inches, which is 6,410 cubic inches, 3.7 cubic feet. Two drawers hold 7.4 cubic feet of bedding, toys and clothes, which is the size of a small dresser.

Load per bed

The Grain & Grove listing says 400 pounds per bed. The Max & Lily says 400 pounds per sleeping surface. A top sleeper of 120 pounds plus 40 pounds of bedding is 160 pounds, or 40 percent of 400. An adult of 220 pounds plus 60 pounds on the bottom is 280 pounds, or 70 percent. The metal listing does not state a limit, so we cannot compute. Ask the seller before you use it for an adult.

Ladders and safety

All three have ladders. Use them rather than climbing the rails. Keep the top bunk for the older or more careful child. Keep the area under the bunk free of hard sharp objects, and do not hang cords or belts from the rails. A night light near the ladder is a cheap safety measure. The CPSC guidance describes the rule as a manufacturer requirement, so what you can do as a buyer is check the rail height, the mattress thickness and the hardware.

Who sleeps where

A twin-over-full is built for different sizes of sleeper. Put the older, steadier child on top, since the upper bunk is the one with the fall risk, and the larger or younger sleeper on the full-size bed below, where there is more width and no climbing. For a teen and a parent sleeping over, the full below suits an adult, and the stated 400 pound per-bed limit helps. A trundle, on the models that have one, gives a third place for a friend, but a trundle mattress is thinner and the listing for the Grain & Grove trundle variant says it must be less than 6 inches thick. Think about who will use each bed in two or three years, since children grow.

Mattresses and bedding

Buy mattresses that fit the frame’s stated thickness range. The Grain & Grove lists 5 to 8 inches, which keeps the rail margin. Foam or hybrid mattresses are heavier than they look, so lifting them onto the top bunk is a two-person job. Use fitted sheets with deep pockets and tuck the corners firmly, because making the top bunk is awkward. Keep pillows and heavy blankets on the lower bunk if the child is young, and avoid thick duvets that raise the effective surface toward the rail.

Assembly

Bunk beds are heavy and have many parts. Set aside a few hours and a helper, lay out and count the hardware first, and follow the order in the manual. The Grain & Grove listing says tools, hardware and instructions are included. Finish by checking every bolt and the ladder. Retighten after the first week and again after a month, and then at the start of each season. Do not use the bed if a part is missing or damaged.

Materials and care

The Grain & Grove is engineered wood with plywood slats and a metal support bar. Composite wood products, including MDF and particleboard, are covered by the EPA’s formaldehyde emission standards, and a compliance label may be present. The Max & Lily lists knot-free solid pine and aspen with non-toxic, low-VOC finishes. Wipe wood with a damp cloth and dry it. Tighten the bolts after the first month and every few months; bunks loosen with use and a loose bunk is a hazard.

Which one for which room

  • Grain & Grove with drawers: the only one with a stated rail height, mattress range and drawer size.
  • Max & Lily with trundle: more sleep spaces and a solid-wood build, but the rail height is not stated.
  • Metal with trundle: the lightest at 131.1 pounds but the least documented.

How to choose

  1. Measure the room and ceiling.
  2. Get the rail height and subtract 5 inches for the mattress limit.
  3. Check the load per bed.
  4. Decide on drawers or a trundle.
  5. Tighten the hardware regularly.

Frequently asked questions

How much floor does a twin over full bunk bed save?

About 33 percent against a separate twin and full bed, by our estimate, for the Grain & Grove.

What mattress thickness can I use?

No more than the rail height minus 5 inches. For a 14 inch rail, 9 inches; the listing says 5 to 8 inches.

How much weight can each bunk hold?

The Grain & Grove and Max & Lily state 400 pounds per bed. The metal bed states none.

Does the lower bunk need a guardrail?

Not if its foundation is 30 inches or less from the floor, per CPSC guidance.

Is a trundle worth it?

It adds a sleeping place but takes floor when pulled out, and the listings do not give its size.
