A small bedroom does not have to lose its desk. With the right spot and the right size, a desk can share the room with a bed without turning it into an obstacle course. This guide shows nine layouts that work, with a few simple measurements so you can check them against your own room.

We have not tested these layouts in a specific home. They are general ideas based on common room measurements, so always measure your own space first.

Measure first

  • Measure the wall lengths and the position of the door, window, closet and radiator.
  • Leave a walkway. Many designers suggest keeping main paths around 24 to 36 inches wide.
  • Leave room for the chair to move: about 30 to 36 inches behind the desk if you can.
  • Check outlets and the router. A desk far from a power point means cables across the floor.
  • Make a paper or tape outline of the desk on the floor and walk around it for a day.

9 ways to fit a desk in a small bedroom

1. Use a corner

A corner is often the least useful space in a small room, so a corner or L-shaped desk turns it into a work area. Keep the desk out of the door swing and leave room to pull the chair out. See our picks for corner desks.

2. Put the desk under the window

A desk under a window uses a wall you probably cannot fill with furniture and gives you daylight. Check for a radiator or heater under the sill, and make sure you can still open the window and curtains.

3. Tuck it beside the bed

A narrow desk next to the bed can double as a nightstand. Keep at least a walkway on the open side and avoid a desk that sticks out past the foot of the bed.

4. Turn a closet or alcove into a nook

If you have a closet you can spare, remove the doors and fit a shallow desk inside. A depth of about 20 to 24 inches works for a laptop or a small monitor. Add a small light and shelves above.

5. Choose a folding or wall-mounted desk

A folding desk gives the floor back when you finish. It suits laptop work best because many are shallow. Check the listed weight capacity and how it locks. See our folding desk picks.

6. Use a rolling desk you can park

A small desk on lockable wheels can sit by the window during the day and slide beside a wardrobe at night. Lock the wheels when you work, especially on carpet.

7. Float a narrow desk behind a sofa or along a wall

In a studio, a slim console-style desk behind a sofa can double as a divider. It works for a laptop and a lamp, but not for a large monitor.

8. Pick a desk with storage

A desk with drawers or shelves means you need fewer extra pieces of furniture. Drawers hide clutter, which matters when the desk is in a bedroom. See our desk with drawers pick.

9. Zone the space

A rug, a low bookcase or a curtain can mark the work area and separate it from the bed, which helps you stop working at the end of the day.

Don’t forget the chair

In a small room the chair can take as much space as the desk. An armless chair or one with flip-up arms slides under the desk when you finish. Read our guide to the best office chairs for small spaces, or check whether a chair will fit under your desk with our chair fit checker.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing a desk without measuring the space for the chair.
  • Blocking the door swing, a closet door or a window.
  • Putting the desk far from a power outlet.
  • Buying a very shallow desk and then needing a big monitor.
  • Leaving no walkway between the bed and the desk.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fit a desk in a very small bedroom?

Start with a corner, the window wall or a closet nook. Choose a compact desk, about 30 to 40 inches wide and 15 to 24 inches deep, and use an armless chair that tucks under it.

Can a desk go next to the bed?

Yes, if you keep a walkway clear on the open side and the desk does not block the way out. A narrow desk next to the bed can also work as a nightstand.

Is a folding desk good for a small bedroom?

It can be, especially for laptop work, because it frees the floor when you are done. Check the depth and the weight capacity before you buy.

What size desk is best for a small bedroom?

It depends on how you work. A laptop needs less space than a monitor. Our desk size guide has sensible sizes by setup.
