Before you order a sofa, bed, desk, cabinet, or dining table, check three different kinds of fit: whether it fits in the room, whether it has space to open and work, and whether it can travel through the delivery route. This free calculator keeps those checks separate so a footprint that looks fine does not hide a blocked drawer, trapped chair, or impossible doorway.
Enter the measurements from your own room and the exact product or package listing. The calculator uses simple geometry and the clearances you choose. It does not promise that movers can rotate an item around corners, and it does not replace manufacturer installation or safety instructions.
Furniture fit calculator
Use inches or centimeters, but keep the same unit for every field. Width means left to right when the furniture is in its final position. Depth means front to back. Height is used for vertical and delivery checks.
Changing furniture type loads editable planning defaults. It does not change measurements you already entered.
Room and furniture
Measure the clear usable room area, excluding built-ins, radiators, and permanent obstacles.
Space around and in front
These are the clear spaces you want to preserve. Use zero only when an edge may touch a wall.
“Extra opened depth” is how far a drawer, recliner, leaf, or sleeper section extends beyond the closed furniture depth. Front clearance is the space a person needs beyond that opened edge.
Narrowest delivery opening
Use the smallest clear doorway, elevator door, stair turn, or hallway on the route. Package dimensions are safer than assembled dimensions when available.
What to measure before buying furniture
Do not rely on a room’s advertised square footage. Measure the actual wall segment and the usable rectangle where the furniture will sit. Record windowsills, radiators, floor vents, outlets, sloped ceilings, baseboards, and door swings. A five-inch projection can be the difference between a cabinet door opening and hitting a wall. Follow our step-by-step room measurement guide if you have not collected these numbers yet.
Measure the exact furniture variant
Product families often contain several widths, sizes, or configurations under one listing. Confirm the selected variant and decide whether the published numbers describe the assembled item, the carton, or both. For a sectional, record every module and the chaise side. For a sleeper sofa, record both closed and open depth. For a table, record the leaf installed and removed.
Measure the use zone, not only the footprint
The closed footprint tells you where a piece sits. The use zone includes everything that moves and the space a person needs while using it. Drawers need pull-out distance plus standing room. Dining chairs need space to pull back. Desk chairs need rolling and turning space. Recliners and sofa beds become much deeper when open.
Editable planning defaults
The furniture-type menu loads the following starting values. They are deliberately editable and are not building-code requirements or promises that a layout is comfortable for every person.
| Furniture type | Extra opened depth | Front clearance | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static furniture | 0 | 0 | Add the walkway you want on the exposed side. |
| Drawers or cabinet doors | 20 in / 50 cm | 24 in / 60 cm | Use the actual drawer or door projection when available. |
| Desk and task chair | 0 | 36 in / 90 cm | Measure the chair at its widest point and in the pulled-out position. |
| Dining table and chairs | 0 | 30 in / 75 cm | Add more when people must walk behind an occupied chair. |
| Recliner | 24 in / 60 cm | 18 in / 45 cm | Use the manufacturer’s fully reclined depth. |
| Sleeper sofa | 54 in / 135 cm | 24 in / 60 cm | Use the exact bed extension and space to walk around it. |
If the maker provides an operating-clearance diagram, use it instead of these defaults. For accessible routes, rentals, workplaces, children’s furniture, wall-mounted products, tip-over restraint, and fire egress, follow the applicable manufacturer instructions and local requirements.
Check the whole delivery route
Start at the truck and walk to the final wall. Measure the clear opening after accounting for the door slab, stops, handles, railings, ceiling drops, and trim. Then check elevators, stairs, landings, and ninety-degree turns. The narrowest opening is not always the hardest point: a wider doorway can still fail when there is no room to pivot immediately behind it.
The delivery result above is intentionally conservative. It checks for an obvious square-opening conflict using the smallest package sides, but it cannot calculate every three-dimensional rotation. Soft sofas may compress, legs may detach, and flat-pack products may arrive in smaller cartons. For sofa-specific orientations and worked examples, see Will a Sofa Fit Through My Door?. Ask the seller for carton dimensions and the delivery team for route requirements before ordering a difficult item.

How the calculator works
Required width equals furniture width plus the left and right clearances you enter. Required depth equals the closed furniture depth plus extra opened depth, front clearance, and back clearance. Required height equals furniture height plus overhead clearance. The tool then compares each requirement with the corresponding room measurement.
The space-use percentage divides the rectangular use zone by the rectangular room area. It is a planning snapshot, not a claim about how crowded the whole room will feel, because it does not subtract irregular walls or include your other furniture.
For desk and chair planning, see our chair fit checker, desk height calculator, and small-bedroom desk layouts. OSHA’s computer workstation guidance also explains why work space should allow users to change working positions; the calculator does not turn that guidance into a universal room-clearance number.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know whether furniture will fit in my room?
Measure the usable room width, depth, and height, then add the clearances and moving parts that the furniture needs. Compare the complete use zone, not only the closed footprint.
Should I use product dimensions or package dimensions?
Use assembled product dimensions for the room check and package dimensions for the delivery-route check. If a seller provides only one set, ask which one it describes.
Can a sofa fit through a door narrower than the sofa?
Sometimes it can be rotated or tilted, especially if the legs come off, but a simple two-dimensional calculator cannot guarantee that maneuver. Measure the sofa body, door, hallway, landing, and ceiling, then confirm with the delivery team.
How much space should I leave for drawers and doors?
Use the actual projection supplied by the manufacturer. If it is not available, measure a similar drawer or door and add standing space beyond the opened edge; the tool's default is only a planning starting point.
Does fitting mean the layout is safe or accessible?
No. A geometric fit does not establish stability, anchoring, fire egress, accessibility, or suitability for a person. Follow manufacturer instructions and applicable local requirements.
Sources and limitations
The calculations are original arithmetic based on the measurements and clearances entered by the user. The editable defaults are Tiny Space Picks planning estimates, not standards. For workstation principles, consult OSHA’s computer workstation work-space guidance. For a difficult delivery, obtain carton dimensions and confirmation from the seller or delivery professional.
